Meet Derek Gibson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Derek Gibson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Derek below.

Hi Derek, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My parents and my grandparents have always been generous and giving people. I like to think they are all partly responsible for my giving spirit. Helping others and offering a hand keeps me grounded, happy and allows me to remain aligned with my purpose and passion in life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
After launching my business in 2017 as a small side gig, I quickly learned how important it is to stay motivated and committed to your art, having a great support system and keeping up with the newest trends. Although, I’ve been an entrepreneur for a few years now, I still enjoy what I do. As a balloon artist and decorator, I am still able to let my creative juices flow each time I am able to help a client bring their celebrations to life. The most exciting part of what I do is turning an empty room into a colorful celebration extravaganza with balloons! I love my clients and strive to keep them happy and satisfied. My business motto is to “COLOR your celebrations with BALLOONS!”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that were most impactful to my journey is perseverance, being a people person and having great communication. The work itself is not hard. However, I’ve learned that one of the main reasons I have repeat clients is my friendly personality and always respecting the opinions of others even if I don’t always agree. The advice I have for others who are early in their entrepreneurial journey is to be efficient, communicate in a timely manner and remain firm on your bottom line. Integrity is key!

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One book I will never forget is titled “My Purpose Driven Life.” The most important nugget I learned from reading it a million times is knowing that not everyone knows what their purpose is. It may take many of us fifty years to find out what that is. However, unless we do our own extensive soul-searching to find out what truly makes us happy from deep within, we will never know.
