Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Derek Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Derek, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I come from a long line of men in my family who have instilled in me a strong work ethic. Starting with my father being the prime example, he taught me at an early age that hard work and being consistent pays off. I was able to start my own business in property management and lawn care by taking the lessons learned not just from my father, but also my uncles, and other close family members to build a line of work that I am proud to put my name on. The discipline and quality of work that I put out is a represents what the men before me have poured into me. I understood from a young age what it means to have a good work ethic and I have my father and uncles to thank for that.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the proud business owner of D.G. Property Management. We specialize in lawn care, pressure washing, and removal of abandoned items. We focus on the maintenance of the exterior of properties. We are known for cleaning up the exterior of properties by turning unmaintained yards into the best-looking yard on the street. In addition to that, we also make properties look brand new with pressure washing and the removal any unwanted debris.
What’s most special is the fact that I am continuing a legacy of entrepreneurship that was paved by others before me. I am excited about being able to pass this legacy to the next generation someday. The knowledge and the work that goes into having something that belongs to you means a great deal. I want to be able to instill the business mindset into the next generation like it was instilled into me.
What sets us apart from others is the team of people we have- we take our time to pour into each project to ensure that the job at hand is completed right. Making sure we leave our mark. As if it was our own property. The feeling you get when a client is pleased speaks volumes to a business owner.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been most impactful on my journey of entrepreneurship is persistence, discipline, and having a vision. Although the list could continue, these three qualities have set me apart from the rest. I have been able to grow over the course of my journey by establishing a vision for what I desired for my company. Once I knew the vision, I continued the course no matter the difficulty while maintaining discipline to stay on that course.
Advice for those who are in the beginning stages of their journey would be to remain on the course-no matter how hard it may get. There may be times where you have to adjust but continue. Progress is progress, no matter how big or small.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
A particular challenge that we face with the business is finding quality staff for our growing needs. As stated previously, the quality of work that goes into property management, you have to have individuals that understand attention to detail and are willing to go above and beyond. Retaining staff in today’s economy is another factor that impacts retention. However, as a business owner, I understand the value of taking care of those who come on board to work hard in supporting the company’s vision and in return they provide the service needed for each property. The challenge is just finding more of those driven individuals to ensure the quality of work is done each and every time as we grow as a company.
