Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Des December. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Des with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic came from my paternal grandmother, who adopted me from foster care when I was 5. She is an immigrant from Dominican Republic and always made sure my brother and I had everything we needed and more. She never finished grade school, and instilled in me that school was the way to go and everything else comes after, like following my dreams of becoming a mainstream artist with a career. I was always an A and B student. When I got into high school I became rebellious and dropped out of 10th grade because I became pregnant with my son at 16. Once I had my son I realized my grandmother was right, in order for me to succeed and take care of my responsibilities I had to persevere in school and make something out of myself. I took on nursing , and graduated at 28. Even though , I am a nurse I am also following my dreams , I have done music videos, released music, had my very own first concert with Curator Vee Henny from The Artistry in NYC . I have traveled the country on tour with MOR Bookings, performing my music to crowds and have been focusing on my ep currently. I am also working on writing for my very first mainstream producer in the industry Mike Free.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Des December a name to remember.
I am an artist , singer , song writer and entrepreneur. I just graduated nursing school and am currently focusing on working on my new Ep Monster House. I’m also currently song writing for industry well known producer Mike Free. I also collab in events with Scott Morris also known as MOR Bookings. We have an event Sept 13-15 in Rhode Island and it’s called Daze Summit , where artists from all over the country come together to show their music in front of the industry, fans , supporters, etc.
With my Brand as an artist and entrepreneur in the future besides being an artist and sharing my creativity with the world , I’d like to also curate events that support gun violence as my uncle was a victim of it. I’ve been shot at too, and was traumatized for years. Along with gun violence, I’d love to throw an event that supports Autism, and mental health too. My son is autistic , and I’m a big advocate when it comes to mental health, I believe a person is truly not able to be their best self without their mental health being properly looked after and nourished.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back three skills that helped me along my journey , are being open and understanding , curious to always learn and accountable for when I messed up but knew I could learn from my mistakes.
My advice to folks who are very early in their journey is to stay focused and be patient. It’s okay to not be okay, be willing to mess up and get up. Stay organized with your short and long term goals. Make sure you write everything down ,so you can visually see and understand what needs to be done.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I’m currently going through at the moment is that I’m going to have surgery soon to focus on my health and rebrand. It’s challenging because I have to discipline myself with the changes that are about to happen and give myself time to adjust to a new lifestyle , while balancing my music and nursing career. Like I mentioned , mental health is a very important and complex factor to excelling in life in my eyes. You are what you put into your body , whether it’s food or even words of affirmation.
To over come this challenge I am remaining grateful to be alive and leaning on those who genuinely support me in any endeavor I come across.
