Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desi Wojtowicz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Desi, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My father. He was an incredible man that was well loved by everyone that came into his life. He was a very successful businessman with a heart of gold. He would give (and literally has given) his shoes on his feet and the shirt off his back for others. Although he had a kind heart, he had the ability to be true to himself and not get walked all over. I am him. I love giving when I can, but I also have a strong fight for what I believe in. I not only make sure to have my back covered but I will always go above and beyond for my clients.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a midwestern city girl who grew up in southern Michigan, went to Michigan state university then moved to Las Vegas on a gut feeling. To tell story from start on how I ended up here, I’ll begin with being 8 years old and I assisted my mother and her best friend providing flowers for a very large wedding. I fell in love instantly with the idea of decorating and designing events because the joy in everyone’s face. Fast forward to high school, my passion for floral design turned into more of a feeling that I want to actually be part of something bigger. I wanted to plan the entire event from start to finish someday. I (like J-Lo) was ready to become a wedding planner.
My father, however, said you are going to College before starting a business. I thought that was interesting because no one in my family went to college but all had successful businesses. I only wanted to go to Michigan State University and I was just going for the thought of business. Well we were the number one hospitality school on and off those years I attended and I truly loved the experience of my classes. They were hands on and help guide me to today.
Vegas wasn’t where I was coming after graduation though. I was moving to Seattle until one gloomy spring day in Michigan I woke up, canceled all plans to move to Seattle (a week prior to moving) and decided to pack up my Ford Escape with as much as I could and drive across country to Las Vegas. I knew a handful of people that somehow grew up near me but I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a place to live, there truly was no plan other than Las Vegas made the most sense for what I wanted in life. I stayed with a friend a few weeks, got promotional modeling jobs, and then after just two weeks figured out where to live and had a job offer in food and beverage at a strip resort. Which ironically was my exact goal. I needed to learn how Vegas food and beverage worked before trying to start my own business. I did this route a few years, however I quickly learned when buying my first house I was very over worked and underpaid. I then cocktailed for a little bit and it was when I was married I was able to focus on and start my own business. It came very natural to me through my connections in town as well as just going out and trying to meet as many people in the industry as I could. I believe that teamwork in our industry amongst each other is the best knowledge we can ever receive.
Currently I am over 12 years in business and it began just like moving to Vegas. I woke up and said I’m going to be a Wedding planner. Today, I am proud of where I am at in the luxury event industry and I am working on a new concept spin off of my business. This is very early on so I can’t share just yet what the next adventure is, however, I hope to begin the journey in the next 6 months and hope all of you follow me throughout it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that my strongest quality and how everyone describes me is: I am unapologetically me. Who you see at an event or in a meeting is exactly who I am personally and at home. This could come with the good and the bad, but I am so easy to get along with and work with because those I trust, I choose. It’s when there isn’t that personal connection that things seem to fall apart. I think it’s so important not only for future clients of planners but also other creatives to build these connections. In just a simple meeting, you will know if there’s a connection or not. I strive on making sure I commit to my clients as well as match them to others with similar vibes.
My greatest skill is that I have this intuition where just even knowing a tiny bit about my client, I immediately know where they will have their event. It may never be on their radar but I just know instantly the one even if I suggest 5-6 others.
I think from a knowledge standpoint, I am strong in believing what works and makes sense especially with budgets. Using this with what can we maybe focus on the most versus something that may not work. Yes of course in luxury we want it all, however, there are key things to truly making your event stand out over others.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who can truly trust me. In any relationship whether it be platonic or romantic, if you don’t have trust it all falls apart. I love when my clients trust me completely. I want what they want. When I know style, I love the trust we have to make it come to life through my design, through the photos for storytelling and most importantly for them. I don’t want anyone to ever stress. I want them to know I always have their back and best interest at heart. Together each and every event will go off so smoothly if they just trust and believe in me. People are scared about pricing, however if you hire the correct planner, you realize the cost is so insignificant to the value. As a consumer, I value time. I pay professionals for things that I could do, however I know it would take me so much longer. And for me, my time is my life. It’s my work to clients so I need every extra minute for them.
