We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Desiraé Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Desiraé, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I believe imposter syndrome often affects people like myself who see their purpose as something outside of themselves rather than something that’s already a part of who they are. I wouldn’t say I’ve completely overcome it — it’s a constant practice — but I’ve learned how to face it head-on.
Even this interview question made me pause for a while, because part of me didn’t feel qualified to answer it. But I realized that was just fear trying to convince me I wasn’t ready for what I’ve already worked hard to become. Imposter syndrome isn’t the final say — it’s just a voice you have to challenge every day.
What’s helped me most is intentional self-talk and affirmations — reminding myself of who I am and what I’ve accomplished. I’ve also learned to accept positive feedback from others as evidence that my impact is real, not imagined. Therapy and journaling have also been powerful tools.
One moment that really changed my perspective was when my therapist, Jennifer, asked me to describe who I am and who I want to be. After listening, she said, ‘It sounds to me like you already are those things.’ That simple statement hit me hard because it made me realize I’d been selling myself short for years.
Now, I remind myself daily: I am everything I am meant to be & I’m exactly who I envision in my daydreams. I am everything I’m meant to be, and I’m already walking in the direction of my purpose. And if I could say one thing to others who feel the same way, it’s this — please don’t give up on the fight as long as you are willing to try, you are already the victor.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist with over seven years of experience specializing in hair styling and overall beauty transformations. My business, VixennStylez, encompasses everything beauty—cosmetics, hair care, and personal style. What excites me most about what I do is helping people express their true authenticity through their outward appearance. I believe beauty is more than just how you look—it’s about making what’s on the inside shine outward.
Currently, I’m accepting clients in Starkville, MS, for all things hair-related, and I’ve recently expanded my services to include lip enhancement options such as Hyaluron Pen and Microneedling Filler treatments. This new chapter allows me to merge artistry and confidence in a fresh way, giving my clients even more ways to feel beautiful and empowered.
Beyond the salon, I’m also a model and video vixen, which lets me express creativity and style from another perspective. Looking ahead to 2026, I’m excited about continuing to grow my cosmetic business, expanding my reputation as a top lip filler professional, and hosting a showcase of VixennStylez and all we encompass —celebrating everything beauty, confidence, and self-expression.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as pivotal to my success: adaptability, professionalism, and passion for my craft. 1. Adaptability: The ability to evolve with changing circumstances is crucial. In today’s fast-paced environment, being open to learning new skills and adjusting strategies is essential. I advise those new to their careers to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and stay current with industry trends.
2. Professionalism: Demonstrating professionalism can greatly enhance your effectiveness in problem-solving and crisis management. It fosters trust and respect with clients and colleagues alike. For those starting out, I recommend prioritizing communication skills, reliability, and ethical behavior. These traits will not only help in client retention but also establish a solid reputation in your field.
3. Passion for Your Craft: Being deeply invested in what you do makes a significant difference. When your work aligns with your true interests, that passion fuels persistence and excellence. My advice is to find and embrace what you love about your field early on. This commitment will not only keep you motivated but will also inspire others around you.
In conclusion, being teachable, confident, and committed to your craft will serve you well. Your passions can be lifelong companions; nurture them and allow them to guide you as you navigate your professional journey.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has profoundly influenced my journey is “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. As someone with ADHD, I often found it challenging to maintain focus and structure. However, this book offered me a refreshing perspective on the power of small changes.
“Atomic Habits” emphasizes that significant transformation does not require monumental efforts; rather, it’s the tiny, incremental adjustments that culminate in lasting results. The concept of building effective habits through simple, mechanical changes resonated with me deeply. It taught me that consistency is key, and even the smallest actions can lead to profound impacts over time.
This understanding has transformed how I approach my daily routines—instilling a sense of discipline where I previously felt overwhelmed. By focusing on manageable goals, I’ve been able to harness my strengths and navigate challenges more effectively.
For anyone looking to create lasting change in their life, I wholeheartedly recommend “Atomic Habits.” It not only provides practical strategies for habit formation but also reinforces the idea that every small step counts towards achieving larger goals.
