Meet Desiree Byfield

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Desiree Byfield . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Desiree below.

Hi Desiree, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience is deeply rooted in my natural inclination to embrace risks in every aspect of life. I’ve always welcomed new challenges and the uncertainty that comes with them, whether in my personal or entrepreneurial pursuits. Certainly, life has presented me with its fair share of setbacks and failures. However, it is precisely these experiences that have fortified my resilience. Through enduring numerous failures, I’ve gained invaluable wisdom and a wealth of experience, making me better equipped to face whatever obstacles lie ahead.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Our brand, Young Gifted and Black 16, was established in 2016 with a mission to celebrate the positive aspects of the black community. In 2018, we embarked on our journey by introducing our initial merchandise collection, which, in retrospect, had a more generic appeal due to our fledgling status. However, as we progressed in our entrepreneurial endeavors, we dedicated ourselves to crafting unique designs and expanding the range of colors available within our brand.

At present, our primary focus centers on promoting our “Black Women Are Dope Hoodies,” tailored for the fall and winter seasons. What sets these hoodies apart is the extensive palette of approximately nine vibrant colors they are available in. Emblazoned on all our merchandise are uplifting affirmations aimed at instilling a sense of positivity within people of color. From items bearing the slogan “Young Gifted and Black” to those celebrating the sheer awesomeness of black men and women, our commitment is to ensure that every person of color feels not only appreciated but also loved when wearing our products.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For anyone embarking on an entrepreneurial journey, resilience, consistency, and continuous learning are paramount. To enhance your resilience, it’s crucial to conquer the fear of failure and approach the process with a more objective mindset. You should also be prepared for the possibility that not everyone will immediately embrace your ideas or products. Remember that in marketing, people often don’t realize their preferences until they see others trying and enjoying something new. Think about how many times you’ve seen a commercial and initially wondered who would buy those products, only to find yourself intrigued after multiple exposures. This illustrates the unpredictable nature of consumer behavior and underscores the importance of investing in effective marketing strategies.

To improve your consistency, it’s essential to keep creating, even on days when you lack motivation. Opportunities can arise unexpectedly, and being unprepared due to inconsistency could mean missing out on valuable chances to showcase your products. The adage that “knowledge is power” remains a guiding principle; always approach life and entrepreneurship as a perpetual student, recognizing that you don’t have all the answers. If you believe you have nothing more to learn, it’s time to step out of the room.
