Meet Destiny Aparicio

We recently connected with Destiny Aparicio and have shared our conversation below.

Destiny, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Adapting to stressors is a challenging aspect of the human experience. Resilience is a personal journey. What works for me may not work for you. I do not need to share personal experiences to cope with adversity. I get my resilience from my art. I express my emotions through painting, drawing, and creating. I learn from the past by painting about how I feel. When days get out of control and I feel lost, I find my resilience by drawing the images or feelings I may have inside my mind or as an abstract artist. I allow my hand to move first. I add paint and an assortment of colors. I add texture by scraping with my fingers, and eventually, an image will appear through the beautiful disarray I created.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am currently attending workshops aimed at sharing knowledge with artists. These sessions are enjoyable because they bring together a group of artists who are eager to share their insights. Additionally, there are opportunities for networking. Having the ability to talk about your art is a skill I am adapting to. Usually, I create and that is it, although the more I examine my own work I recall my state of mind, my thoughts, and my emotions during the time of my art.

I am excited to see my artistic style evolving! Through my art, I feel a deep connection to my culture. I have begun creating a series of paintings that depict the stories my father would tell me about his village. As I paint live, people stop to examine my work and ask about the stories, which serves as a way to continue the storytelling tradition of my culture—something I am immensely proud to share. Storytelling plays a vital role in preserving old cultures and the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three skills that have impacted my journey most are public speaking, time management, and social media.

I was naturally a timid child, but now I have gained the confidence to speak up and share my experiences. I enjoy teaching others about the wonders of art. It’s powerful to discuss your own artwork because no one can convey its meaning better than the artist themselves. People appreciate hearing about your creative process and the stories behind your art.

Recently, I participated in a Q&A panel discussion, and to my surprise, I was given a microphone while an audience looked straight at me, waiting for me to share. I felt proud of the artist I am becoming, especially since my younger self would have been intimidated in that situation. Now, I welcome any opportunity to speak about my art at events.

Time management is crucial for artists because of the deadlines they must meet. Before an event, there are several important deadlines to consider, such as drop-off and pick-up times and submitting any written materials like an artist biography. Delaying your submission can hold up the event while the curator waits for your work. It’s always best to ensure that everything is turned in on time.

Social media provides a platform for expressing your personality online and helps you connect with an audience that appreciates your art. It’s important to determine how open you want to be in your online presence, so setting your own boundaries is essential. Additionally, being creative with your social media is a lot of fun! You can design your profile, share images and videos, and engage with others in meaningful ways. Social media is a valuable tool for artists to find open calls and art shows to participate in.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am interested in collaborating with more galleries and participating in exhibitions to showcase my work, as well as to seek opportunities for live painting and sharing my artistic journey. I have started taking part in themed exhibitions, which have challenged me creatively and allowed me to create pieces that align with the themes related to my painting style. The more events I participate in, the more I learn about the art world.

If someone is looking to collaborate with me, they can reach out to me through my email or my art Instagram and send me a direct message. I am open to new endeavors they can also reach out to me and share upcoming ideas or projects they have in the works.
