We recently connected with Destiny “dessie” Starnes and have shared our conversation below.
Destiny “Dessie”, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
One way I persist despite the nay-sayers is just completely continuing to believe in what God told me, no matter what it may look like right now I always knew I would be successful. It was truly just the matter of when. I had my mom doubt me, my peers and sometimes I even doubted my self but God reminded me every step of the way I was on the right path. I just pray he continues to guide me along the journey while I’m on my way to my destination. The nay sayers/“haters” got to me at first, especially family, because I couldn’t understand how people could see you trying and still try to tear you down, but now? I use that as fuel to my fire to keep pushing to get where I want to be, be cause I know I’m HER, and quite frankly, as often as they keep my name in their search bar, they do too.
It’s all good ma, you’ll see soon.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
So currently I am 100% a DIY girlie. I’m into anything surrounding arts and crafts and just being creative. I am currently working on pushing out a few of my business I’ve been revamping on, this summer. I can’t say too much but just know there’s a lot of huge things on the way.
As of right now my main focus is continuing to get visuals for my audience to be able to see exactly who I am how I do what I do, and watch me grow and develop into the woman God put me on this earth to be.
I have been networking and collaborating with businesses, schools, artists and producers like myself, attempting to build a team of heavy hitters with a wide variety of ranges to choose from. I am also now doing volunteer work as a music teacher at my old elementary school now so I am super excited about that as well.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back man, I’d say three qualities or pieces of knowledge that were the most impactful in my journey was learning to look people in their eyes while having conversations.
Study what that does for you and to that person.
The second would be learning to speak slowly and clearly and DEMAND what it is I want. Also using DISCERNMENT, and not allowing people to trick you into anything that’s only beneficial to them.
And last but not least, remaining humble and resilient. Good guys finish last. The turtle won the race. Remember that.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am currently letting God bring me people to collaborate with.
I am looking to collaborate with some painters, clothes designers & find a non profit organization to help out people like me and you who are coming across hardships and hard times. I also want to collaborate with the homeless shelter one day in regards of finding a better approach to homelessness, in Georgia but all over the world. Homelessness is something no one should have to experience no matter what, and I truly feel like we as a community need to do better supporting our brothers and sisters who fall in hard times due to hardship.
The people I’d like to collaborate with still, is Jozzy, Boosie, Summer Walker, Sza, Void, Doechii, Project Pat, Trinidad James, August Alsina, Lauryn Hill and maybe a few others.
You all can find me on any social media platform under the name of (Dessie Da Don) where I have most of my contact information via email or telephone number available.
