Meet Destiny Harris

We recently connected with Destiny Harris and have shared our conversation below.

Destiny, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

DISCLAIMER ALERT: Before I even try to lie to you all. I’m not this jolly, obnoxiously, shouting positive affirmations individual. I believe that optimism is always falsely viewed in this light of never being negative at all and almost painting it as “perfect” — which it is not! Optimism, in MY OWN definition, is your willingness to keep getting up, climbing over,— whatever have you, to that goal of yours. To be truthful about 85% of my days include me saying “I’m Done.” . But yet, I’m here in New York City… living here now… oh, and still training for my acting career. So, my optimism comes from my own true understanding of myself, passion, and my need for these aspirations in my life. When you truly know what you want as far as your: career, spirituality, fitness, etc. I mean the proof should be in pudding. However, as much as I do keep trying towards these life goals of mine — I obviously keep encountering the inevitable challenges too but as I stated, inevitable, these challenges are going to be here waiting for me whether I’m chasing after what I truly yearn for or just doing what we have to do to get by….

So, the real question is : WHAT WILL YOU LOSE? Would you rather lose your whole life’s meaning and purpose and by the way this has nothing to do with spirituality talk either (which I LOVE to do) but by facts— by allowing a world that was literally designed to put you down do it? Or at least get one win in life and that may just be to claim what you know to be true to yourself and go after it for as long as you got? I already got my answer, which is where I get my optimism from.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Professional working Actress, who is currently based in New York City furthering my training at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre ! The most exciting aspect to my career is me having the ability to create ! Not only do I get to create but I make sure of it being true to and from me when I do.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities in my career thus far that have been impactful to my journey are (as I previously stated) : true understanding of myself including my passions, and Need for these passions, which brings in my constant optimism to keep pushing me towards it !

The best advice I would LOVE to share to artists that are just starting out their careers is: MAKE SURE this is truly what you want to do. Whether it be acting, creating music, art, etc. Being an artist of any kind is not and will never be easy — let alone stable. But the little or HOPEFULLY, lots that you get to do gives you so much life meaning that you’re willing to be the underdog for years, get rejected constantly, make absolutely no money, etc. <—- if this is okay with you, I think its safe to say you’re on the road to being a true artist. If not, this is not the field that you’re going to be able to sustain and most importantly not truly what you want to do.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My biggest and most noticeable area of growth has been in my own self- confidence ! Which is a huge deal — being confident in what you do, bring to the table, etc. in the career of being an artist is very VITAL. So, the fact that I can see that area in my life improving, just gives me an even better reason to keep at it — learning to Love Me.
