Meet Destiny Monique

We recently connected with Destiny Monique and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience come from growing and learning from the different challenges that I’ve been through in my life. Instead of allowing these challenges to break me as a person, I allowed them to mold me and grow from them to make me a better person. I took them as a learning experience, to never give up in life. To always bounce back from whatever it is or was that I maybe or may have went through. With God on my side, I knew I could achieve anything I set my mind too. No matter how hard things may have gotten for me, I knew if I kept God as number one, things would get better. Those challenges are what helped build my resilience and make me the person I am today. It made me a better me. Without them, I don’t know who I would be as a person or where I would be in life. I’m thankful for them.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a baker. I bake desserts from scratch using my grandmothers recipes. I started baking at the age of nine. When Covid started in 2019, that’s when my business started. In 2020, that’s when I decided to give the chocolate dipped treats a try, once I successfully made them more than once. I decided to ad them to my menu for customers to purchase along with the baked goods!!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Having a food business, I have to keep in mind that people enjoy fresh food. I only make products when orders are made the day of or the day before. I never have anything on hand just waiting for someone to call and request it. People love fresh desserts. The second is, updating my customers from the moment they place a order. I let them know when I purchase products, when I start making the order, down to it being done. Until we meet. I love to keep my customers in the loop. I’m order for them not to worry. Third, I make sure I have a clean work area at all times. Working in food and nutrition, it had to stay clean or we couldn’t prepare food for the patients. I look at my business the same way. I wouldn’t want to prepare orders for my customers in a kitchen that wasn’t up to par. Work of advice for new business owners, always remember this is your brand. It may seem rocky or slow at first, but it will get better. Just keep that faith, God will get you through this storm.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my mom did for me was, she worked three jobs when I was a little kid (at once). By her doing that, it taught me that it’s nothing wrong with working hard to get what you want it life. Yes that meant she had less time with me. But she left me with someone she knew she could trust me with, her parents. I was absolutely crazy about my grandparents. I was the first granddaughter. I wanted to be under them all the time. But I seen my mom and my granddad working all the time growing up. There would be days when I entered school, my grandmother would send myself and my youngest two uncles to school. And as I would be leaving out for the school bus, my mom would be coming home from work. As I would be coming home from school, she’ll be going to work. As I grew up, I had that same work ethic. I work just as hard as she did. Not because I have too. But because I want too. My mom taught me that it’s better to work for what you want. Than to go out and steal or kill to get what you want. And that’s what I do. I work to get what I want in life. Along with whatever she may want as well.
