We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destiny Pullings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Destiny, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered my purpose at a young age, and it all began when I was just 12 years old. In 2009, I felt a profound call to follow my dream and turn my passion into a purpose-driven bakery, which led to the founding of Destiny’s Pops.
From a young age, I was being groomed and molded to be a successful entrepreneur. I now understand that this was part of a larger plan, guiding me towards my true calling. At 12, I shared with my mother my dream of owning a cake business. She supported my vision by enrolling me in baking classes, which turned out to be a pivotal moment. As they say, the rest is history. By 2009, I launched Cakes by Destiny. Due to strong business acumen and exceptional customer service, the business quickly grew and evolved. In 2011, Cakes by Destiny morphed into Destiny’s Pops.
Since then, we have been serving some of the greatest baked goods. We specialize in making cake pops, cakes, cupcakes, cakes in a jar, cookies, and vegan sweets.

About Us
In 2009, The founder of Destiny’s Pops heeded God’s call to follow her dream and turn her passions into a purpose driven bakery. Since then, we have been serving some of the greatest baked goods. We specialize in making cake pops, cakes, cupcakes, cakes in a jar, cookies, and vegan sweets.
The founder, Destiny Pullings started Destiny’s Pops at the young age of 12 years old. Growing up Destiny was being groomed and molded to be a successful entrepreneur. She now knows that God was moving her into her “destiny” and her gift. At the age of 12, she told her mother, “she wanted to have her own cake business” so her mother invested in Destiny’s GOD given talent and enrolled her in baking classes. As they say, the rest was history. In 2009, Destiny started Cakes by Destiny. As a result of her excellent business sense and customer service her business rapidly expanded. In 2011, Cakes by Destiny morphed into Destiny’s Pops.
Now 12 years later, Destiny is a wife, mom, baker, and an entrepreneur. Destiny’s passion and love for baking has never wavered and nothing makes her happier than being apart in the special celebration of her customers.
Throughout those 12 years in our business success as morphed, we have received recognition from customers, local newspapers, business calendars, News/TV appearances, and was even featured in the NFIB Small Business Weekly’s publication as the Young Entrepreneur Spotlight and the nationwide television show “Harry Show” with Harry Connick Jr.
As a company, we believe in evolving. So, In 2021, we evolved our brand of Destiny’s Pops to a more purpose driven company. We felt the call to expand beyond the local homebase bakery, which we so loved for 12 years. We are excited to share our story and sweets with the world! After 12 years of operating in the Richmond,Virginia area, we have relocated to Maryland. Our servicing area now includes the entire DMV area as well as nationwide shipping.
It is our mission to continuously evolve over time, we have revised our recipes, branding concept , creative design process, and menu. We are committed to enhancing the customer’s sweet experience while offering quality and consistency. Through really great desserts served perfectly, with building community with people all at the same time.
We, as a company, are always looking for new ways to give back to our community. We believe it’s very important to empower young-hearted entrepreneurs to grow and achieve at whatever they put their minds to. We strive to offer programs and services within our company that will help people to grow, learn, and connect. That is why we have implemented two awesome programs in Destiny’s Pops. One of which is our Baking It Up Academy program. Through this program, We host a series of in-person and online baking classes for all ages. And the second, is our Give A Cake Program; this is something Destiny’s Pops takes pride in. This program is a new initiative to our expansion for our new rebrand launch. Which focus around the value we provide within our community!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey as an entrepreneur, I believe the three most impactful qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge were:
1. Entrepreneurial Spirit: This includes determination, vision, and the ability to embrace challenges. Owning a business involves navigating ups and downs, and having a strong entrepreneurial spirit helped me remain resilient and adaptable. It allowed me to tackle various aspects of entrepreneurship with a positive attitude and perseverance.
2. Passion for the Craft; My love for baking was crucial to the success of my business. Passion drove me to explore and create new flavors and menu options, which in turn elevated Destiny’s Pops. It was this enthusiasm that kept the business thriving and constantly evolving.
3. Support and Continuous Learning: Throughout my 14+ years as an entrepreneur, I’ve benefited immensely from a supportive network. This included loyal customers who have been with me through various milestones. Additionally, I’ve embraced a mindset of continuous learning, always seeking new knowledge and skills to enhance my craft and business.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
1. Cultivate an Entrepreneurial Spirit- Develop resilience and a positive mindset. Understand that entrepreneurship involves challenges and uncertainties. Embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth and remain committed to your vision.
2. Foster a Deep Passion for Your Work- Find and nurture a genuine passion for what you do. This passion will not only drive you to push boundaries and innovate but also keep you motivated during difficult times. Your enthusiasm will be evident to your customers and can be a significant factor in your success.
3. Build a Support Network and Commit to Learning: Surround yourself with supportive mentors, peers, and customers who can provide guidance and encouragement. Additionally, never stop learning. Continuously seek new knowledge and skills related to your craft and business operations. This will help you stay relevant and competitive.
By focusing on these areas, you’ll be better equipped to navigate the entrepreneurial journey and achieve long-term success.
