We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deszara’ Armani a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deszara’, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
We live in a world of uncertainties, some things are within our control, some things are not. For me, I’ve always looked at the world with optimism; I knew from a young age I was different. I was a spiritualist, I dressed different, I spoke different and my interests were different. By the age of 10 I knew how to run a business and communicate amongst adults. I was kind of the “smarty pants”. I would actually get in trouble for being a know it all. It actually led me into becoming self-doubtful and insecure with myself growing up. I would then later develop anxiety and depression from this, which was very debilitating, especially becoming a teen parent at the early age of 16. In my journey and despite the obstacles I was facing, that optimism I mentioned never left me. I then moved to Brooklyn, New York, pursuing my dream to become an influencer model and clothing designer. I still managed to hold those qualities of being different (speaking and having unusual interests) which led me to opening my very first clothing brand. I then went on to build a 10 year long career in Night Life. Even in that industry, I was different and alot of times considered myself as underdog because people didn’t see my worth. In time as my career was ending, I realized that being different is what makes me who I am and there wasn’t anything wrong with me. If anything, people wanted to be like me “lol”. When I started to view this perspective I became a lot more confident and more comfortable with myself. I didn’t allow my self-insecurities get the best of me anymore and I knew that would change my mindset to become more effective and successful in my journey going forward. When you accept your uniqueness, you realize how much you mean to yourself. Knowing that what others thought of me didn’t matter anymore, I had to live for me. Being different and never losing my optimism is something I’m forever grateful for and it’s led me to creating a more fulfilled and purposeful life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born in Pontiac, Michigan, right outside Metro Detroit. Currently a Brooklyn, New York resident for the last 12 years. Brooklyn has brought out the best in me because people here are very liberal and passionate about being themselves. I very much took to that because I’m from a small town so being easily judged was very common. I had a natural born love and talent for The Arts; dancing, modeling, fashion & speaking/writing. I never could see myself doing anything else career wise, so those things have been my life, and being true to myself has been my number one priority. I’m also a traveler! I love traveling, I just returned from Turks and Caicos with my children and was literally the most beautiful country I’ve visited so far. Traveling has certainly had an impact on becoming my best self! Currently, I’ve been building my social media presence on Instagram (@deszara) where I can be booked for media events, advertisements and video shoots as well as designing and creating for my new couture clothing brand Pink Playland (@pinkplayland). I also must mention that I wrote my very first Ebook: “I love me more” A guide to a high value life; which I’m super proud of! It can be now purchased on my website. My brand is about self-expression, self confidence and becoming/being your best self! Just this year I held a self love class, i’ve been featured in a few things like game shows, fashion shows and music videos. I even had the opportunity to showcase my pieces from Pink Playland at a pole studio in Brooklyn, so thank you to the owner Cue! Life has been super fun! I look forward to continuing working with others, spreading awareness of self-expression and building a solid brand that others can trust and relate to.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being optimistic, accepting myself and having disciplined have been the key factors and most impactful in my journey. If you find yourself in doubt for any reason, know that you are worthy and deserving. Stay disciplined because it’s not always easy being motivated. When your disciplined expect the outcomes to be better, and they will, which leads to having optimism, that drive and faith good things will happen. Don’t give up on yourself, others will and in the end, you’ll thank yourself, that’s what matters, is how you feel about yourself.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Allowing me to be vocal in my opinions and beliefs. Though they didn’t always agree with my views, they certainly gave me the freedom to express myself. I’m very appreciative of that! Thank you Mom & Dad!
