We recently connected with Devanshi Patel and have shared our conversation below.
Devanshi, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I’m an introvert. Confidence in talking to people doesn’t come to me naturally. Luckily my husband is an extrovert and he really worked hard on me when it came to talking about my business, artwork, making bookings. He used to take my mock interview in a way every time I was going to work or had table set ups. I was very bad in the beginning had no confidence at all and I was super shy.
Besides my husband teaching me what to say how to say things to help me, getting more experience and work gave me some real confidence. My customers always loved my work and their appreciation helped boost my self-esteem. At this point both confidence and self-esteem comes naturally because i believe in my work quality i trust myself with any designs and i know my work is worth the price.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a henna artist specializing in bridal henna. Bringing every ideas of my clients to life, making their special day more special and a constant smile on their face makes it very special. When I first started I was full of doubts but I realized I absolutely love doing what I do. We are working on our website to make inquiries and bookings easier. I’m open to travel all over USA or for destination wedding so I’m expanding my radius. I also provide saree draping services. I noticed that their is a need for this in wedding industry and besides henna saree draping is something that helps customers and makes things easier for them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As an henna artist I never think I know it all I practiced a lot so I improved my quality of work and speed. I also stayed updated with latest trends. If you don’t stay updated and update your design with time eventually you can be out of market coz your designs are outdated and you don’t want to make that mistake.
Do not wait to be perfect because nothing is ever perfect. As an artist I always see the mistakes and things I can improve on. start with what you know and have keep taking feed backs and keep improving.
Believe in yourself, your talent and your work’s worth. Have a set price. Lowering your price to get business can devalue your hard work and that’s not good for your business.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
There are a lot of people who have helped me through this journey. My husband Pratik as I mentioned earlier helped me through social skills and looking confidence. My friend Bhavisha (another henna artist) helped improve my skills some techniques. My mom who encouraged me to learn the art as a kid. Gopiben, Viraj bhai and Pratik they all helped me with business part from creating contracts, learning numbers, marketing ideas and more. And all my family and friends who trusted me encouraged me and supported me. I don’t think I would have even thought about starting this business if it wasn’t for my friends Priya and Krupa who trusted me with their bridal henna when I wasn’t even doing this professionally.
