We recently connected with Devendra Narayandas Bajaj and have shared our conversation below.
Devendra Narayandas, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
If someone had told me a decade ago that I would be leading a group of individuals—mostly women—in uncovering the latent power within our breath to conquer our deepest anxieties, I would have dismissed them as delusional. Back then, I was merely a stressed and overworked young man, caught in the relentless cycle of societal expectations.
Growing up in India, my upbringing was steeped in traditional values and the belief that the cornerstones of success were education, employment, and matrimony. Yet despite diligently following this prescribed path, I neglected an equally vital aspect of life: understanding my own emotions.
By my mid 30s, after years spent chasing accolades and outward validation, I found myself completely burned out. Ironically, it took hitting rock bottom—experiencing chronic stress so intense it felt suffocating—for me to begin excavating the layers of physical and mental chaos that had accumulated over time.
For me, the initial catalyst came from an unexpected source: breathwork. What began as an exploration in yoga classes quickly transformed into a lifeline—a way to reconnect with myself amidst overwhelming pressure.
As I delved deeper into breathwork I discovered how powerful conscious breathing could be in combating anxiety and restoring balance within myself. I realized then how disconnected I’d been from myself throughout those years dedicated solely to external achievements—how little attention I’d paid to what lay beneath the surface emotions begging for acknowledgment all along. This awakening illuminated paths leading toward authenticity rather than mere conformity; embracing vulnerability became synonymous with strength rather than weakness.
Thus emerged not only newfound clarity regarding purpose but also compassion for others wrestling silently under similar burdens. I gained a new found desire to guide others through their own transformative journeys using tools like breathwork, which proved so effective personally.
Before long came opportunities where I found myself sharing these practices with small groups seeking emotional and mental relief. Each session became sacred—a space where we collectively breathed together exploring methods designed not only to promote relaxation but also foster connection—to remind each other we’re never truly alone even when facing our inner demons head-on!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My lifestyle and wellness business is called Cultivate Prana. My mission is to empower people with the knowledge and tools to master their breathing through many ancient and modern breathing techniques, which are collectively called breathwork.
At its core, breathwork encompasses the conscious act of altering our breathing patterns to influence our emotional and physical states. There is deep connection between our emotions and breathing; every feeling we experience can impact how we breathe. Conversely, by modifying our breathing, we can evoke different emotions and sensations within ourselves. This interplay between breathing and emotion represents one of the simplest yet most powerful aspects of breathwork—an art form that invites us to engage with our inner landscape through conscious regulation of breathing.
Throughout history, various cultures have developed numerous styles and practices centered around breath regulation. In yoga, one finds a branch dedicated entirely to breath control known as Pranayama—a term that combines two key elements: “Pran,” symbolizing the vital energy carried by each inhalation, and “ayama,” which refers to breath modulation or control.
Within my academy’s teachings on Pranayama lies an innovative approach that diverges from traditional applications—one that emphasizes flexibility rather than rigid adherence to prescribed methods. Traditionally, Pranayama has often been bound by specific requirements for seated positions such as full or half lotus poses—practices that many find challenging.
While this emphasis on posture is valid given current lifestyle demands—it inadvertently sidelines another critical component: breathing itself—the secret key capable of unlocking not only physical potential but also emotional depth and spiritual awakening through awareness cultivated via intentional respiration techniques.
By releasing ourselves from these rigid traditions surrounding Pranayama practice—I empower practitioners with simple methods designed for integration into everyday life and fostering gradual familiarity with diverse breathing patterns over time.
As more people begin adopting breathing exercises into their routines—it becomes increasingly clear why such practices deserve attention—they provide tools capable of elevating everyday experiences, transforming mundane moments to sacred ones and ultimately cultivating connections, building authenticity, resilience and grace!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Embarking on a journey in the health and wellness industry can be both exhilarating and intimidating. Reflecting on my seven-year adventure as a solopreneur, I have identified three core skills that have significantly contributed to my growth. These qualities not only helped me establish my business but also shaped the way I connect with others in this vibrant field. For anyone contemplating a similar path, understanding these essential elements can pave the way for success.
The first skill that transformed my approach to business was identifying a niche. In a world filled with diverse health and wellness options, finding a specific area to specialize in is crucial for standing out among competitors. For me, that niche was breathwork—more specifically, Pranayama practices rooted in yoga philosophy. The journey into this specialty began with my personal experiences; I discovered the profound impact conscious breathing had on my life during challenging times.
As I delved deeper into breathwork education and practices, it became clear that sharing this knowledge could bring transformation to others as well. Thus began the development of small workshops designed to introduce participants to the power of conscious breathing. What started as an initial two-hour workshop grew into an offering that I would take from one venue to another—yoga studios, fitness centers, spa academies—the possibilities were endless.
Starting small but focused allowed me to refine my offerings while connecting with individuals who were seeking tools for their own wellness journeys. Each workshop provided valuable feedback and insights into what resonated with participants. This iterative process enabled me not only to enhance content but also build a community around shared experiences.
The second critical skill lies in connecting with your audience genuinely and authentically. In today’s digital age filled with social media noise, establishing real connections can feel daunting yet necessary for any business owner aiming for sustained growth. While some entrepreneurs gravitate toward online platforms for outreach, I chose a different route by prioritizing face-to-face interactions whenever possible.
By limiting myself geographically—driving no more than two or three hours from home—I created opportunities for personalized engagement with attendees at various events and workshops. These intimate settings fostered trust between myself and participants; they could see firsthand how passionate I was about helping them through their own journeys.
This connection culminated each year during an annual Pranayama retreat held in Southern Indiana—a serene weekend where participants could immerse themselves further into breathwork practices within a supportive environment free of everyday distractions. The relationships built through these interactions turned casual attendees into loyal clients eager for deeper exploration of their personal wellness paths.
While nurturing genuine connections is essential for building trust within your community, leveraging technology has become equally important in today’s business landscape—the third vital skill every solopreneur must master is understanding technological tools available at their disposal.
From crafting compelling copywriting that resonates with potential clients to building effective sales funnels leading them toward purchasing decisions—technology forms the foundation upon which successful businesses are built today. While many may find learning these skills overwhelming at first glance—especially if starting from scratch—it’s imperative new entrepreneurs invest time mastering them early on before considering outsourcing assistance down the line as they grow operations further down their entrepreneurial journey.
Lastly—and perhaps most importantly—I encourage emerging solopreneurs within health & wellness space to simply be themselves throughout this entire process! Authenticity shines brightest when we embrace our own unique voice instead of trying too hard to fit any preconceived mold.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Conscious breathing is one of the most effective methods for managing overwhelming feelings. By simply becoming aware of the sensations of our breath, we can ground ourselves in the present moment.
To practice breath awareness, you can simply pay attention to how it feels as air enters through your nostrils—notice the coolness on the inhale and the warmth on the exhale. You may also choose to focus on other sensations related to breathing: perhaps feel the slight rise and fall of your chest or abdomen as you breathe in and out or notice any scents around you that enhance your experience.
Once you’ve established this connection with your breath, allow yourself to deepen it further by incorporating specific techniques designed for relaxation. One such technique comes from Pranayama. Viloma Pranayama, often referred to as “staircase breathing,” is particularly effective for those moments when stress feels insurmountable. Imagine climbing a staircase; each step represents a pause in your inhalation process. Instead of taking one long deep breath in at once, break it down into smaller increments: inhale gently through your nose for two counts; pause briefly; inhale again for another two counts; pause once more; continue this pattern until you’ve filled your lungs incrementally—and then slowly exhale fully through your nose or mouth.
By following this staircase approach when inhaling—breaking it down into manageable chunks—you create an intentional rhythm that encourages relaxation while maximizing lung capacity over time. The extended out-breath serves not only as an outlet but also signals physiological calmness throughout your body—a remarkable countermeasure against stressors both big and small.
