Meet Devereaux Banx

We recently connected with Devereaux Banx and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Devereaux , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I grew up with a beautiful mother that always supported me and poured so much love into me. She raised me to believe in myself, to believe that I could do anything my heart desires. Over time I took chances on myself in areas that I had always wanted to explore and achieve, and makeup was one of those things.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been an active makeup and drag artist since July 2020, and I truly feel like the best part of what I do is being able to turn into practically anything I think of. I love the aspect of transformation, and we all have that power deep within us. I mean as quoted by the incomparable RuPaul, “you’re born naked and the rest is drag.” We all decide who we are on a day to day basis, and if I decide I want to be a zombie, why just limit that to Halloween?

When it comes to my brand and what I bring as an artist, I want people to understand that there is no limit to my artistry. I love all forms of drag and makeup, they all have a special place for different reasons and the best part of what I do is being able to encompass them all.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that I would say brought impact to my career would be for one, the countless YouTube videos and books I watched/read to learn about makeup and beauty. Jackie Aina, Nyma Tang, Kevyn Auqoin, Pat McGrath, just to name a few examples of who I studied from, who brought beauty in a way that was important to my growth. The second thing would be actually forcing myself to do at least 3 looks a week when I first started doing makeup. I knew I could get to where I wanted to makeup wise, I just needed to get through the hurdles of learning the process and perfecting my craft. Lastly, I would say having the nerve, the gall, the audacity, and the gumption to start doing makeup at all. I think regardless of what your ambitions are, believe in yourself to be able to achieve them and also put in the physical effort to make it happen! You have to get out there and actually do it, daydreaming about it won’t make it happen.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I think my biggest improvement in my makeup has been my base makeup. I think people focus a lot of the eyes and lips (rightfully so!), but I think your base really makes the look a lot of times. Its not easy, and takes a lot of time to get right, but once you do it really makes the difference.
