We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Deville a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Deville, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by stirring it on purpose. That could be walking through an art gallery, digging for rare tracks, or watching documentaries. I’m constantly feeding my mind and staying curious about the world around me.Little things like that always spark something in me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Paris and L.A. I blend classic R&B with contemporary sounds. I would say that my music is deeply rooted in soul.
Being originally from the caribbean, Guadeloupe to be exact, has shaped my worldview and my sound in ways I’m still discovering. There’s something about growing up surrounded by such rich musical culture that just flows through everything I create. I try to channel those diverse influences into my songwriting and production, creating music that tells stories and connects with people on a deeper level.
What excites me most is that moment when all these different elements come together when a track captures that perfect balance between honoring the legends who came before while pushing the sound somewhere new. That’s what I’m always chasing in the studio.
So far, I’ve been focusing on singles and collaborations – my latest single being ‘Last Day Of Summer’ and a collaboration called ‘Drivin’ Too Fast.’ But I’m excited to announce that my debut EP is coming soon, which I’ll be revealing more details about very shortly
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning to wear multiple hats is the greatest advantage. Mixing, producing, editing, and understanding the business side gives you creative control and helps you understand your craft fully.
All good things take time. Building a foundation and developing your sound is the most important part of the journey. For those starting out celebrate small wins, focus on your own growth rather than comparing yourself to others, and remember every artist’s timeline is different.
Don’t lose sight of why you started making music or whatever it is that you do. That joy and passion is your fuel and it reflects in your work. I make it a habit to reconnect with what inspired me originally and I don’t let business overshadow my creative joy.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I’ve learned that when overwhelm hits, I need to pause and prioritize decompression. I enjoy meditation and taking proper self-care breaks. Or getting a good workout in to clear my head and refocus.
