We recently connected with Devin J. Ricks and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
You’re welcome! Yes for me, I personally took a hard good look in the mirror (soul searched) and reminded myself of who I am/inspired to be. It works every time! Think of the meme when Hermit The Frog is looking into the mirror with the hoodie on. That pretty much sums up our self-talks (laughs). I did it as many times as it took for the narrative to stick & I became who I was destined to be. Eventually, overtime the imposter syndrome faded away.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Of course. I’m an American film director, actor, media personality, and entrepreneur from Baltimore, Maryland. I’m known for creating and directing the Love Cycle Saga; a series of films that explore different aspects of love, including family, friendships, and relationships. I’m best known for my media coverage during the BET Hip Hop Awards (2017-2019), using my personality name “Fly Guy.” In addition to my filmmaking career, I’m also an entrepreneur with investments in several businesses.
I started my filmmaking journey at an early age; recording home videos with my family & friends creating skits. I went on to study film at Morgan State University and opened my own production company, Devin J. Ricks Productions. I specialize in filming/directing motion pictures along with videography services to bring people’s visions to life. My clients are always looking for something unique and are always amazed with the end result. With my movies, I aim to share beautiful love stories and help people navigate the complicated emotion of love through my films. Outside of my media & film company, I’ve also stepped into the lifestyle and fashion world creating the highly acclaimed, “No More Apologies” clothing line. The brand has been doing very well. I’ve been blessed to have celebrities showcase my line and I’m overall happy that the phrase itself is captivating and motivating for so many.
I’m most proud of all my endeavors. Filmmaking is where I’m most passionate, but my other business interests have grown on me in a special way over time. What I believe I do differently in my expertise is that I make sure I’m doing things different creatively. I stay true to myself and I believe that is what speaks to my clients & follows through in my work. It has been a journey; being a business owner, a creative and so much more. I’m thankful I’ve been allowed to get to know myself through my work & grow. If I had to do it all again, I’d choose this lifestyle each and every time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
3 things that were most impactful during my journey was:
1. My Mentality/Ability to Adapt and Maneuver.
2. Networking/Building Relationships.
3. Awareness & Flow of Life/Balance.
My advice to develop these core things will be to get to know yourself first. Build your character and understand who you are. The things I mentioned above were most impactful to me & is still today because life is ever changing. You have to keep things within your life in a beautiful alignment. Storms come to pass, relationships change (will ideally have to make new ones overtime) and understanding the balance of life is major key. If your temple/mental isn’t healthy, things around you won’t manifest properly. I believe in that whole-heartily. Create your endeavors like blueprints. You have to start out how you want to finish. Brush up on your spiritual work! I assure you, aligning that with your goals & dreams will get you far and things will slowly fall into place.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who isn’t afraid to step outside the box creatively. Characteristics I look for is charisma, good manners & a great sense of humor. I prefer to relate to my clients in those regards. Those are the ones that stay loyal to me overtime. They build their trust within me (vice versa) creatively over time. I love when they allow me to be the artist I am when producing work for them (services). It creates the ideal flow for me (us both actually). I love when I forget I’m working and completely have fun. It’s the best!
