We recently connected with Devin Kowl and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from the desire to truly want to succeed. I was always taught I can be anything and do anything I put my mind to if I truly work hard enough at it. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs in my family, so growing up it gave me a totally different mindset than the average person. To be able to watch people set goals and achieve them was one thing, but being able to witness the hard work, discipline & courage it really did shape my work ethic.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Well my name is Devin Kowl, I am a singer/Songwriter and and forth generation entrepreneur. I have lived in LA for 11 years, I moved to LA a the age 18 to pursue a music career and have been here ever since. Since giving in LA I started a company with my family called Favour Consulting Group, were we help my start and develop nonprofits. After taking a hiatus from music help build that company working on music again. When we started Favour I had no idea it would become so successful so fast, however even with its success I still felt like something was lacking and that was my art. So after taking break from music I am back realizing new music and performing!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the three most important quality Is have learned on my journey are patience, grace & whatever your doing, do it because you love it.
I say patience because, nothing great happens over night they always say it takes “10 thousand hours to master a craft”.
I say grace because on my journey, I have learned it is important to give yourself grace. I had to learn that it’s ok to mess up, it’s ok to not know the answers. However, it is important to give yourself grace and space and the time to learn.
Lastly, I said that whatever you’re doing do it because you love it, because no matter how hard you work sometimes we get caught up in the recognition from others and sometimes feeling like we haven’t “done enough yet”. The area thing is when you’re doing because you love it, it slash easier to cut out all of that noise and remember you’re doing it because something that bring you pure joy and happiness and fulfills yourself.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One of my favorite books I have ever read is called “Today We Are Rich”
One of the most important things that I have learned, and I carry with me no matter what, from that book is how everything we do in life starts with making a decision. In the book there’s a part where this family is going through the great depression, and the head of the family cause a meeting and stands up and says
“I’ve decided that the great depression is over for this family”.
In the book after they have that moment, the family goes on to start all types of businesses, and become extremely successful.
I love that part of the book because it basically talks about how in life everything starts with the decision and anything that we want to do we can make happen as long as we make the decision and stand in it, and believe it.
