We were lucky to catch up with Devin Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Devin, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose after going through the devastating pain and trauma from bullying. I experienced bullying and I saw how other kids were going through it too. Since I knew that it wasn’t only happening in my environment and because it has impact so much of the world, I knew that I needed to do something about it. I needed to Race To Speak Up. It led me to finding my purpose. My purpose is to educate all about bullying prevention and empower students to be upstanders for themselves and each other. The Race To Speak Up anti-bullying organization was born out of going to different schools, organizations, and communities to educate about this bullying epidemic in effort to further prevent it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Devin Moore, Founder and CEO of the Race To Speak Up, anti-bullying organization. Through Race To Speak Up, we educate about bullying prevention, inspire unity among all people, and empower students to be upstanders and support each other. After going through bullying myself, I knew I wanted to be a part of the positive change that puts an end to it.
We offer Race To Speak Up Against Bullying Workshops, where I speak at schools, organizations, companies, and communities about how they can work towards lessening bullying and be upstanders. It allows for participants to gain anti-bullying knowledge, learn about how to be upstanders, create effective solutions to this bullying epidemic, and educates them to bring a Call To Action that can be implemented in classrooms. The interactive workshop furthers anti-bullying education and creates a more positive, kind and respectful world.
I’m also the Author of Devin Speaks Up!, a children’s anti-bullying book that speaks about the importance of being okay with being different and loving who you are, speaking up to someone you trust about being bullied, kindness matters, and encourages kids to be upstanders for each other. It’s not okay to be bullied. It’s okay to be a friend. We need to embrace each others’ differences in a world that includes all kinds of people from all walks of life.
We offer Devin Speaks Up! Book readings where I go to schools, libraries, bookstores, organizations, and companies to read Devin Speaks Up!, and it allows for the audience to participate in our Question and Answer, and positive affirmations activities. Kids love when their classmates repeat the positive affirmations because it feels empowering and overall fun.
Beyond this, I’m 19 years old and currently a sophomore at the University of Maryland where I study Psychology and minor in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three important skills that were most impactful in my journey were problem solving, public speaking, and time management. Problem solving and creating different ways to educate about bullying prevention has given me insight on the best ways to lessen this issue.
Since I speak in front of large audiences of all types (youth, adults, students, parents, educators, community and organization leaders), it is important that I use language geared toward that audience in effort to ensure that they really are able to gain and correctly interpret the new knowledge they now have.
Time management is a very important skill to have when being an entrepreneur because you may have to balance work and school life. This is something I’ve been doing ever since I start Race To Speak Up when I was 14 years old. And now, as a 19 year old college sophomore, I’ve been able to be an Author, Founder of an organization, as well as a student who ensures that their mental health is in check.
The advice I give to people who are early in their journey in order to best develop/improve these skills is to use google calendar because it will help you keep track of all your assignments, events, study time, work time, and the rest of your daily activities. It will also allow you to figure out how much time you can allot to yourself. Mental health is very important. I personally love to do yoga when I have free time. Do what you love in life.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client would be a student who is open to learning about the best ways to support each other. I always love when someone that is my age or close to my age comes up to me and tells me about what they are going to do to help a classmate or they let me know that they are going to speak up to someone who will help them in their situation (such as a teacher or adult).
Of course, I always love to speak to all kinds of people – people from diverse backgrounds, those who are from all over the world, parents, students, teachers, leaders, and all other people who are open to learning about important issues like bullying.
