Meet Devonna Banks-Law

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Devonna Banks-Law. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Devonna , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Optimism for me comes from knowing that “troubles don’t last always”. I’ve been through some really hard things in life and I am able to look back and see just how God brought me through. So basically if I’m still here I have another chance to do/be better and keep striving towards my goals. .

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a professional baker whom most would consider not formally trained. But I say, there was no better teacher than mine, my grandmother. Everything that I know is because of the foundation she set a long time ago. It’s very important to show people love and the way I do that in my career is through delicious baked goodies. Butter Bakery is set apart from others because of the nostalgic way I do things, just like grandma with a little twist. As much as I love what I do, I realize that the calling on my life is to help others to see their full potential and be of help getting them to bloom right where they are.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The greatest quality that I personally possess is the ability to bring sunshine to another persons life. I often consider how what I do can change the mood of anyone. I’m terms of skills, I am always open to learn and get better at what I do. I have an advantage since I’ve been baking/cooking since I was a little kid. But what’s most important is to have drive/commitment. That takes you the furthest in whatever you seek to do. My advice to anyone trying something new is JUST MOVE FORWARD!! Everyday will not be easy or fun but if you are passionate about what you are doing it will certainly help carry you through the dark days. Because for sure there will be some.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
It has taken a long time for me to come to this but, when I’m overwhelmed I just stop. I have often felt like I had to always push through, don’t sleep/eat, make sure the customers are always happy etc. Then I realized as I was laying sick in the bed for a couple weeks that if I do not take care of me all of what I do is for not. I’m a firm believer in trusting my gut. Sometimes in business we automatically believe that we can not ever say no. What I know for sure, all money ain’t good money and that every customer is not for me. Learn to step away when your everything tells you to, period.
