We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devyn Richmond. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devyn below.
Devyn, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose when I realized that life isn’t about finding a purpose. I believe everyone’s true purpose is to find happiness and then spread it. My purpose wasn’t going to be giving facial treatments to others — it is to make others feel good through confidence. I truly think the best thing you can do in life is to be a kind person to those around you. You just never know whose life you can positively affect by doing so every day.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Devyn Richmond, I’m a 26 year-old skincare specialist and business owner of Lexington, Kentucky’s first ever Korean skincare studio!
When I went to school for my aesthetics license in 2021, I knew my passion was the skin and its health. After graduating, I quickly learned that the skincare industry in the United States has so much room for improvement. With other regions, such as South Korea, far surpassing us as our FDA remains behind in cosmetic ingredient approval, prohibition and innovation. This is why I decided to go out on my own and open a skincare studio rooted in Korean skincare approaches + philosophies! All my products in-studio + professional facial treatments offered are imported from South Korea and are formulated by Korean dermatologists and aestheticians, providing the newest and most effective skincare that works with the skin and not against it. Most of my clients come to me with irritated, tired, stressed and damaged skin, not knowing what went wrong. For me — my passion truly comes from helping and teaching others how to care for the largest, outermost organ that was designed to protect us. Helping others love and care for their skin is what I love! Happiness truly radiates with confidence.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Social skills, self-confidence and building relationships!!! I worked at a local fine-dining establishment for 8 years before going to aesthetics school. I stand by my belief to this day that I would not be as confident with my communication skills if I hadn’t had that job, exposing me to so much interaction. It’s so inevitable to feel good energy from others when it’s genuine, so to be able to spread it through conversation and relationship-building is just such an important thing to do as an entrepreneur! There is no competition. Be kind within your community and the right people will gravitate to you.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe that no one is great at everything and niching has changed my business for the better. As an aesthetician, it’s important for me to only offer the treatments that I like to perform. I LOVE the skin and its anatomy. Makeup, lashes, waxing? Not for me! And that’s okay. I love those services and get them all done for myself, but I personally don’t enjoy performing those services on others. So why would I invest my energy into something that I don’t enjoy? I think beautiful things can come from switching your focus to improving on the strengths in your business that you really enjoy. Your clients can tell if you love what you do!
