We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dewayne Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dewayne, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by using fashion as my voice. As a Deaf model, visual expression is everything so I draw from emotion, culture, and my own journey. I stay inspired by creating from the heart, not comparison

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a deaf model passionate about representation and redefining beauty standards. I use fashion as visual voice and aim to inspire others by showing that presence speaks louder than words I am currently focused on editorial work and I am also launching a fashion brand project soon, so stay tuned!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three things that impacted my journey most were overcoming obstacles, leaning into creativity and being fearless.
as a deaf model, I’ve had to navigated spaces that weren’t always designed with accessibility or inclusion in mind. that reality became one of my biggest obstacles, but it also built my resilience. it taught me how to adapt, advocate for myself, and still show up with presence and purpose.
Creativity has always been my way of communicating beyond words. I express through movement, energy and emotion, and style. I use visual storytelling to connect whether I am in front of camera, everywhere else
And fearlessness is what keeps me going. I’ve had to step into places where I was not sure I’d understood , but I didn’t let that stop me. I trust my vision, and I know I belong no matter the noise, or lack of it.
Together, these three qualities shaped my path and continue to fuel me in every space I enter.
Start with what you have and dont wait to feel ready, when people are already counting you out. show up and prove them wrong. obstacles will come, but they are there to shape you, not stop you. protect your creativity and dont compare, just create. and be fearless enough to move, even if you are scared. you grow by showing up, dont hold back.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was love and support me exactly as I am. they’ve always believed in my ability to become whoever I choose to be. that same support through my siblings and the rest of my family including. my grandparents, my great grandmother, and my late uncle, who all hold a special place in my heart
