We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dezy Jackson Hughes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dezy , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Truthfully I struggled as a child and teenager up until I was about 17. I haven’t always had the level of confidence I have now. No matter how encouraging my mother tried to be to me it took me seeing for myself my beauty and my own worth! Then being plus size I definitely was teased and would shut down but now, honeyyyy you can’t tell me nothing! The confidence and self esteem I have now came from me realizing how bomb I was and not just in the physical appearance! I had to learn to accept me, Dezy, all of me, flaws and all! Because there is beauty in our flaws! And it’s why I strive so hard and I’m an advocate for self esteem and confidence because you have to know how great YOU are in side and out! There is beauty in being uniquely you! This didn’t happen over night. Definitely took some time with God and lots of prayer. But I’m grateful for the level of confidence and self esteem I have because i didn’t realize how many people are encouraged by me having this confidence.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Dezy Jackson Hughes, and I am the owner of Classy Face by Dezy! I am a businesswoman who’s also an accomplished professional makeup artist. While I have completed many projects on sets of commercials, television specials, and movies, my absolute favorite engagements of all time to accept are bridal glam/wedding glam engagements. I love being involved in my client’s special day and being more than just their artist! What I’m most proud of since moving to Atlanta are the goals I’ve set for my business ventures I’m currently accomplishing, whether it seems small or substantial. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been so worth it! I never compare myself to other artists simply because I feel every artist is unique and great in their own right. I believe in making sure my clients know, “I’m not making you beautiful…I’m enhancing the beauty you already have.” I believe beauty starts before the stroke of the brush.
This year I plan to launch my cosmetic line that I’m super excited about! It’s definitely going to have some great stuff!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Don’t rush the journey! Success does not happen over night no matter how much social media makes you think it does! It takes time, a lot of faith, and prayer! Do. Or compare your journey or success to some one else’s your times coming, until then keep working and when the time comes don’t stop working just reach farther. And always believe in your self! Nobody can take that away from you. Whatever business or idea you have believe in it! Make silent moves and the success will speak volumes.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My family is my biggest cheerleading team! From my husband, my 3 daughters, my grandmother, my aunt, my siblings, few friends, godparents, and most of all God! I’ve kept him with me every step of the way, even on the bad days. I’ve acknowledged him, kept my faith in him even when I didn’t quite understand the process! I’m a strong believer and my faith in God has gotten me a lot further than my talent has so I dare not give credit to anyone else first before him! Because without him none of this would be possible! Prayer is key! Staying focus and working hard! It may not happen over night but it will happen in Gods timing and I’ve learned from experience. His timing is best!
