We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diana Lazare a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Diana, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self-discipline comes from numerous desires and observations. I believe that if I set a goal and am consistent, there will be a reward. I look forward to rewards. I am currently reaping the benefits of saying no to myself over the years, even when my own fleshly desires would rather do the opposite of the better idea. I also watched my mother make good choices and decisions and my siblings and I are the beneficiaries.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a huge health and fitness enthusiast! I appreciate all things relating to nutritious, yummy, protein-filled meals, drinks, and snacks. I also like to move my body. It is a gift from God to move without restriction and I plan on using this gift for as long as I can.
I love health and fitness so much I decided to become a certified health coach. I developed a program and a plan to support women that are looking for a change and want to live in a healthy body. The program is for those that want to make health and wellness a lifestyle and need weeks of support. My plan is for women that have good habits in place and need direction and information to meet their health goals.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I review qualities that were impactful in my journey as it relates to my success with health and wellness, I don’t think I would have met my health and fitness goals if I wasn’t determined, resilient, and consistent.
The advice that I would give any person starting in their journey to wellness is to just start. Procrastination doesn’t yield anything. If you start today, you have already won by being closer to your goal today than you were yesterday. Find out what your “why” is and let that drive you daily. I love the idea that James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, shares about documenting consistency and the intangible reward. Get a calendar and for every day you complete the planned task, mark that day. There is an undeniable sense of accomplishment that accompanies looking back at a calendar full of marks indicating that you were successful with your tasks. If life happens and you are unable to complete a task, don’t dwell there. Pick up from where you left off and get going the next possible day. Look for improvement and not for perfection.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my mom did for me was share words of affirmation and give me great advice about life over the years. I call her my cheerleader! If there is one person I can count on to share positive words to get me through some tough times, it would be her! She’ll say things such as “Pray and things will work out, trust God” or ” You’re smart, you can do it”! She’s imparted words of wisdom and I’m forever grateful. I think what I’m most grateful for about her positivity is that it’s been ingrained in me and so I’m able to do for my children what she did for me. I consider myself to be a cheerleader to my family, friends, and those I interact with as well. If I meet a stranger, I can quickly find something about that person that I can compliment.
