Meet Diane Jorge

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diane Jorge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Diane, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is a part of the journey of pursuing your dreams, especially anything with comedy. We all doubt our skills and capabilities from time to time. The main thing for me is to have faith in myself and my capabilities. I know how to make people laugh, but I’m going to have a bad night and bomb here and there. If I have a bad night, I try to learn from it as much as I can. So, I’ve also taken the sting away from failure by giving myself grace and encouraging myself to take big swings. The real failures in life are the ones you don’t learn from.

I recently heard about the rule of thirds. When you’re chasing a big goal, you’re supposed to feel good a third of the time, okay a third of the time, and crappy a third of the time. If you feel good all the time, then you’re not pushing yourself enough.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am lot of things – actor, comedian, improviser & storyteller. I’m born and raised in Miami. I’veperforming all over South Florida & the country for over 15 years. As an improviser, I have performed, taught and directed improv with various groups including Just the Funny, Front Yard Theatre Collective and ImprovU. I’ve taken my solo improvised show Solovela (an improvised telenovela based on audience suggestions) to various comedy festivals including the Miami Improv Festival, Omaha Comedy Festival and more. When I’m not performing stand-up as myself, you might catch my alter ego Mercado de la Fortuna. This character is loosely based on famous Latin astrologer Walter Mercado & recently headlined at the Miami Improv. As a storyteller, I won The Moth StorySLAM in Miami in 2022. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Honestly, discovering improvisational acting a.k.a. improv was probably the most impactful thing I’ve done as a performer. I was able to play on stage and discover my voice as a performer. It taught me to be in the moment, be quick on my feet, and stage presence. It made me more comfortable with the unknown and reduced my fear of failure.

I definitely get in my head and listen to the critics in there more than I should sometimes. But I’m trying to be more ominously positive. I just have to believe that some form of success is inevitable. Leap and the net will follow.

To anyone that wants to be an entertainer, you have to be okay with being cringe and being uncomfortable. You’re going to have bad nights that you make worse on stage, even when you’re trying to make it better. Those are the times that test you. That’s where you learn and get better.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I do a lot on and off stage. I also have a day job, a marriage, family, friends, a full life. And still don’t find time to do things I need to do to take care of myself. I struggle to find those pockets of time where I can write material or record something. I try to give myself grace with that because if I don’t live my life – then what will I write about? But I’ll keep the plates spinning for as long as I can.
