We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Diego Morales. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Diego below.
Diego, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
The way I found purpose was through pain. The man I am today was developed through a lot of hurt and a lot of tears. I can say that confidently now because of what all that pain did FOR me, not TO me. I could have folded. I could have given up. I didn’t because I am blessed more than I deserve. I have a family that loves me, I have friends who are like family, and with those two in my corner I can’t lose. I won’t. Before comedy, I was just going through the motions. Then that pain hit and changed me entire life. I became someone I never imagined I could be. I never dreamt or tried to do anything I am doing now. But through that pain, I learned I could overcome a lot. I am still learning. That’s the beauty of that PAIN. It keeps teaching me. After all these years, that, no matter what, I am me. Me is a product of my parents who raised me to be this way. They overcame way more than I have, and still had a good home and smile on their face for me and my siblings. They taught me humility, honesty, and faith. They taught me that no matter how low you may feel, there is still tomorrow. And if you wake up tomorrow, you’re already winning.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am son. I am a brother. I am an uncle. I am a father of 4 beautiful girls. I am Diego Aaron Morales from Oak Cliff, TX and I wear those titles proudly. I am a failure who didn’t let those losses define me. I am an honest person who was raised right through immigrants that left everything they know to give my siblings and me a better life. I am Mexican American. I am Azteca. I am a fighter. I am TEXAS CHUCKLE.
I do stand-up comedy, I do FM radio, I host boxing events, I host every kind of party, I host music festivals, I do IT work, I do construction, I do pest control, I do what needs to be done in order for my family and me to survive. I support women’s rights through my all female comedian showcase called, “Someone’s Daughter.” I support youth sports teams. I do all this because my parents taught me as a kid, that we get what we earn. No matter what. I am the voice of the people for the people. I am my daughter’s greatest hero. I am who all the failures of my life have groomed me to be. I am someone who will help those in need. I am someone who will fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. I am an honest person because that’s what my parents fought for their whole lives. I am Texas Chuckle.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful thing to ever happen to me was pain. I say that again because that pain defines me. I am blessed enough to have support from family and friends to have had love to overcome that pain and help me get through it. Through that pain I learned what integrity holds. Through that integrity, I learned that no matter how bad it may seem, there is always another chance. How you take those chances, will make or break you. If you are going through it right now, remember this….there are other people in this world going through worse. Focus on that in those times and you will figure out what you’re really made of.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents taught me honesty. I remember as a kid, I wanted all the nice shoes my friends had in school. My dad would tell me he couldn’t afford them because he just paid all the bills. He would tell me, but that’s okay. He would say he could go and try sell drugs, or steal, or do other things to make money but what would that teach me? He told me, “Quizás somos jodidos, pero somos honestos.” To me, it translated into, “maybe we are broke but we are honest.” That is something I have been trying teach to my daughters. I hope they teach that to their kids. So it can become something that carries on for generations to make my parents proud. To make their sacrifice worth it. So that honor is an understatement.
