We recently connected with Diego Serrano and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Diego, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from having to figure things out on my own, starting with just a camera and a vision. I didn’t have connections or a clear path laid out. Everything I’ve built came from staying curious, staying committed, and showing up consistently even when there was no guarantee of success. I’ve moved countries and started from scratch, I’ve had to adapt, learn fast, and keep moving forward. That’s where the resilience comes from, not giving up when it’s uncomfortable, and learning how to trust my own voice through all of it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a film director specializing in docu-narrative storytelling, blending the honesty of documentary with the cinematic style of narrative filmmaking. I work on documentaries, music videos, and commercials, always aiming to create work that feels real, looks cinematic, and leaves a lasting impression.
What excites me most is telling human stories in a way that’s both artful and true. I started with just a camera and a curiosity for people’s lives, and that’s taken me from small personal projects to international productions. My short documentary Supay screened at festivals around the world before streaming on Amazon Prime Video, which led to bigger, more challenging opportunities.
Recently, I directed a branded piece featuring a UFC fighter and a music video for the artist “G2”, both projects that let me experiment visually while keeping the story at the center. Right now, I’m focused on pushing my style further, taking creative risks, and collaborating with brands and artists who want to create work that’s authentic, cinematic, and built to last.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three things have shaped me as a filmmaker: resourcefulness, emotional intelligence, and resilience.
Being resourceful has meant finding creative solutions no matter the budget, timeline, or circumstances. Delivering high quality work even when conditions weren’t perfect. Emotional intelligence has been key to building trust with collaborators, clients, and talent, allowing me to tell stories that feel authentic and connect with audiences. And resilience, learning to navigate pitches that don’t land or projects that shift has kept me moving forward without losing momentum.
For me, every challenge is an opportunity to adapt and elevate the work. I value collaboration, clear communication, and pushing for the strongest creative possible, no matter the format, whether that’s a docu-style brand piece, a music video, or a narrative spot.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
In the past year, I’ve grown a lot in managing the creative process from start to finish. I used to focus mostly on output, making the most of every opportunity that came my way, but I’ve been learning to be more selective about projects and manage my time more efficiently. This has allowed me to invest more energy into each project and lead them with intention, from concept through delivery.
I’ve also pushed myself to explore new tools and techniques, staying open to feedback and treating every project as a chance to learn. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with talented creatives, especially cinematographer Adrian Smith, videographer Matthew Reed, and the broader Dallas creative community, whose insight and support have been invaluable. This past year has been about becoming more confident not just behind the camera, but as a creative leader who can balance vision, quality, and collaboration.
