We were lucky to catch up with Dina Behar Hevert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dina , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from my parents. They taught me, that my thoughts have power and to think positively. They also instilled faith in me, I was raised to believe that everything happens for a reason. As I have grown up into an adult, one of my core tenants in life is that everything works out the way it’s supposed to. Good or bad, things work out as they should. Every experience in my life, good or bad, has made me into the person I am today and for that I am grateful.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
For the last 5 years I have been working on opening my glamping resort and building a wine label in Paso Robles, CA called Vinyl Vineyards all while also starting our young family with my husband and business partner and working a fulltime job in the entertainment industry. I have two boys, one is four years old, his name is Ty. My second son is named Asher and he is 9 months old.
Our campsite “Glampsite” (Glamourous campsite) just opened this past Spring. We have 6 fully restored vintage trailers we named after classic rockstars who influenced the design aesthetic of said trailer and 4 campsites you can rent and bring your own camping set up. Each trailer is totally green using solar power as the only energy source to power the fans, AC, fridge, microwave, lights and of course the Vinyl record player located in each one. Our campsite gives our campers the opportunity to disconnect, slow down, and enjoy nature while also enjoying all the amenities of California’s wine country. While staying with us our guests get to experience life on a working vineyard where we not only grow grapes, we raise alpacas, chickens, bees, and grow wonderful fruits and vegetables like olives, tomatoes, asparagus, tomatoes, asparagus, strawberries and so much more!
In midst of birthing both babies and a campsite, we also gave birth to our wine label Vinyl Vineyards. Our first vintage was a 2021 rose of Mourvèdre. We are now in our third vintage of our Rose, and have produced two different Red Blends one is a Rhone called Crossfade a 50/50 blend of Grenache/Syrah and the other, a Boudreaux blend called Self-Titled. All three of our wines have won medals from the San Francisco chronicle’s food and wine festival, two silver medals and our Self-Titled won a gold medal. Both my reds scored 93 points from the American Fine Wine Institute. We recently added a White wine to our Line up which is 100% Vermentino that is truly delicious!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I look back on my journey thus far, I think the thing that sticks out the most is a willingness to take risks in pursuit of a dream, followed by Tenacity, hard work, faith, and a little insanity. So many things happen in life that you never see coming, and it’s important to be willing to roll with punches and keep going despite what’s out of your control. I find humor is great tool to help cope when the going gets tough.
The thing I’d tell people who are early in their journey is to have patience, even if it feels like what you want is a lifetime away, all the things you do no matter how small help propel you forward and before you know it you’ve hit plenty of milestones and you are one step closer to your goal. I’d also say to make sure you align yourself with good people in your life. Building your dream can be really hard and it helps to have solid people in your life you know you can depend on.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My Husband has been the driving force in our business and my rock in our day to day family life. He works tirelessly to keep our business moving forward and closer to our dreams of owning a successful winery. He is constantly coming up with new ideas for marketing strategies to attract both guests and wine buyers alike. He is my IT guy, my web developer, my wine maker, engineer, my facilities manager, business strategy, content creator, and so much more. I focus on vendor management, sales, and community outreach, and public relations and child rearing.
Starting your own business is one of the hardest things we have ever done. California is an especially hard state to get up and running in due to local laws and regulations. It’s tenuous and expensive. One day you feel like you are making progress and the next day you’ll feel like you have taken 10 steps back. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and partnering with the right person or people are essential for success.
