Meet Dion and Rachel Laws

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dion and Rachel Laws a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dion and Rachel, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Part of being an entrepreneur is the ability to work really hard even when the goal is very far away. Starting from the ground up can be very intimidating; therefore, we always keep our heads up and focus on what we bring to the table (not comparing ourselves to others). This resilience of keeping the goal in mind is what we do every day, it’s a part of who we are and what we want our kids to see as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Rachel began her studies as a communications and business major in early 2000’s. After completing her studies, she’s always had a desire to open her own business. However, her confidence just wasn’t there yet and used her organizational skills to work in medical education for the time being. Dion began his studies in videography in early 2000 and joined the MO National Guard. With Dion and Rachel having the training and education, they decided to utilize their skills and join together to create Focus+ Films.

Together Dion and Rachel work closely with the KC community to film events, small business promos and wedding films. As Dion and Rachel continue to thrive together as business owners, they definitely have a lot of goals for Focus+ Films but will always keep one objective in the forefront – treat customers/clients the way they would want to be treated.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that were most impactful in our journey are education, life experiences and hard work. Without out degrees in business, communications and video production we would not be where we are today or be able to serve in the way we want to. However, in order to reach certain goals, you need to work hard at what you want in life and realize no-one else can do it for you. With life experiences being thrown at us, we continue to strive and be the best that we can be; even when life is hard or things don’t go just the way we had planned.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As we have grown our business one strategy we have kept that stays consistent is never overbooking ourselves. We will never choose too many clients to book just to make more money because we value our family time and work-life balance. We want to enjoy life experiences just as much as we enjoy our business. However, when we need to get away and take a break, we will always free up that time and choose our priorities carefully.
