We recently connected with Dipali Dewan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dipali, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My son Kiaan, not a single day goes passes without learning a valuable lesson from my little munchkin. Whenever I encounter a roadblock, a simple conversation with him is all it takes to refresh and restart my perspective.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I kickstarted my career in the fashion industry, crafting designs for renowned names like Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Anthropology, Express, and more. Amidst this journey, I stumbled upon laser work, fascinated by its diverse applications. With a penchant for repurposing items and sustainability, I naturally gravitated towards wood as my preferred medium.
Upon relocating to the US and embracing motherhood, I found solace in my home studio, fondly dubbed “my zen space.” Here, I aim to bridge the cultural gap I encountered upon moving, offering products that resonate with our heritage and traditions.
My work is deeply influenced by my son Kiaan, whom I believe should experience the richness of my upbringing. From personalized Indian toys to custom-made Diwali rangolis to Christmas tree ornaments, each piece is personalized and crafted with love in San Diego.
While I frequently introduce new products, I’m thrilled to unveil a fresh lineup focused on celebrating the legacy of Bharat.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I strongly embrace the ethos of “work is worship,” especially when it aligns with your passions and beliefs. The immense satisfaction and inner strength I gain from my work compel me to approach it with unwavering ethics and unwavering dedication.
I’m surrounded by incredible people who’ve consistently supported me, but you know where I truly hit my stride? In my studio, where I can freely unleash my creative energy. The invaluable feedback from my wonderful customers continually inspires me to push the boundaries of my designs. What’s been instrumental in my journey is my deep understanding of the techniques and technology I employ, coupled with my extensive knowledge of textiles and my cultural roots.
For those who are just beginning their journey, my key advice is to cultivate patience and never give up as they navigate the path ahead.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I’ve recently teamed up with other mompreneurs and discovered the power of collective growth through knowledge sharing and mutual support. Additionally, I’m thrilled about my latest series of products I am working on, which is already generating significant positive feedback.
