Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DJ B Holla. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
DJ B, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I feel my purpose found me. When I was 10 years old, I knew that I wanted to be some kind of DJ, preferably on the radio. I felt the joy that radio personalities would give to everyday people through entertainment and music. It was knowing you had the people in the palm of your hand and the ability to control the pulse in a positive manner. I wasn’t thinking of the monetary accomplishments or shortcomings when I wanted to become this. I only thought of the happiness I would be able to contribute.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a DJ and a MC. The thing that makes it special is knowing you have a hand in being able to have numerous people enjoy themselves in that setting. It’s not about how I feel or how I’m doing for the most part. It’s making sure that those who paid money to come into your establishment trust me to make sure it’s a wonderful experience. It is making sure the music as well as your personality speaks to them and makes it personal. My brand or art is about making sure you have a good time. I have mixes on platforms like SoundCloud for people to listen to, as well as numerous events at clubs in the Tampa & St Petersburg area.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important things was always learning about music, improving on those skills, and feeling out every audience. Being firm or non compromising on one set of ways will never benefit someone. It’s all about making sure you are a sponge to soak everything in and then taking details from each experience to apply it to the next. Its all about having an open mind and then putting in the work to keep those skills in tact.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest area of improvement is essentially getting out of my own way. I’ve witnessed numerous DJs play great sets and think in the back of my head, “How are they able to do that?” The awful thing is that I’m just as talented as them (with great sets myself) but didn’t apply that same energy to take it to the next level. After an awful situation involving me taking a step back from DJing, I came back with a hunger and drive of feeling I was forgotten. So I threw those insecurities to the wind and not only improved my sets, others have noticed as well. This has caused me to get even more opportunities to show my skill set.
