We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dj Bizzy Www.djbizzy.com. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DJ Bizzy below.
Hi DJ Bizzy, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My mother had my sister whom is eleven years older then me when she was 17. She had a hard path being a single mother who was disowned by her family for deciding to have a baby out of wedlock. My Mom is literally the hardest working person I have ever met. She wasn’t always able to chase her dreams but she made sure that I had the capability to chase mine.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My music career had humble beginnings in my Dad’s drum/sound room growing up. That shaped and formed my next journey of finding myself as an artist in Philadelphia then moving to Detroit to pursue a radio career there I met my production partner and best friend Jared Gosselin we decided LA was calling us. When I got to LA I met another friend that become family Sied Charhour aka Pittsburgh Slim he had some really interesting hiphop he had been working on and together we started hustling everyday as a duo. A year into our endeavor Jay Z signed Slim to a record deal for our single “Girls Kiss Girls” and “Tastemaker” the album was released on Def Jam records (over the years we also released four mixtapes that I highly recommend checking out especially Nolita Nights my favorite)
I got involved in the nightclub community in LA and thrived in LA for 16 years. I performed at legendary clubs all over the country and held residencies at Bootsy Bellows, Hyde, Sayers Club, The Dime, SOHO house, Tao, Greystone, Emerson all in LA and Greenhouse, 1Oak, in NYC, and others in Vegas, Miami, SD, SF, Chicago, and beyond. During this time frame I met a publicist in the movie industry Charlie Pinto and signed to do my first movie premiere on the red carpet and the after party for JJ Abram’s Star Trek. It was an amazing experience being a sci-fi fan and movie buff and now being involved with a massive premiere that shut down Hollywood Blvd. From that point I performed at over 150 red carpet events, movie premieres, and private events for the likes of Paramount, Warner Bros, Disney, MGM, Sony, National Academy of Recording and Arts, Clear Channel, Netflix, Kenneth Cole, Details Magazine, Def Jam Records, Sprint, Coke, Redbull, Patron, and Nike. I have done private parties for Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Courtney Cox, Emma Roberts, Rob Dyrdek, Megan Trainor, David Arquette, Chris Pine, and so many others. David Arquette and Bizzy became friends and basketball buddies and started a nightlife show called The Goodtimes where Dave and Bizzy dressed in wild suits Dave had collected over the years and performed at clubs and functions together, Bizzy DJing and David hosting and playing Trumpet. In this time frame Bizzy was paired with Twitch from Ellen/So You Think You Can Dance fame by his manager at the time. The two hit it off and started doing events together as “Twizzy” a performing arts act with Bizzy DJing and Twitch hosting and dancing. We had clients such as Fiserv and Porsche. While performing in the clubs Jusic J’s personal assistant at the time met me snd saw me perform, Juicy J was a bout to do a long term college tour and was looking for a “scratch” DJ to join him and Crazy Mike on the road. I auditioned and everyone got along great and I found myself sharing the stage with hiphop legend Juicy J for a solid 2-3 year run. At the end of 2019 I decided to move back east my father had started showing signs of sickness. I moved back east and 4 months later my father passed away do to colon cancer. I was at a loss. Confused and depressed do to other personal life events. I decided I would make PA, MD, and DC my home and live closer to my Mom and family. Currently you can catch me in Bmore at Rockwell, El Bufalo, and The Worthington and in DC at Heist, Chicken and Whiskey, Never Looked Better, Death Punch rocking dance floors. In 2023 I started a new electronic dance record label with long time friend Jared Gosselin AKA DVRKO called Gold Teeth Brigade. We have signed other producers such as MVXMILLI aka Vex.S and together we have been releasing house music for the heart and soul. Mainly tech house and electro but also some progressive stuff.
What’s next? Watch and see. 😎
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Persistence. I have gotten a million No’s for my 100 wins. Never give up on your life calling. If it resonates in your soul then find your path.
2. Determination. Practice, practice, practice. Always be willing to learn new things and techniques and always be willing to put in the hard work to learn and perfect your abilities correctly.
3. Respect. Pay homage to the ones before you. Show up for others the way you want them to show up for you. Above all RESPECT YOURSELF. Do this first and often and always. Stick to your values, beliefs, and views.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Every industry comes with stress. First thing, breath. Find a breathing exercise that works for you. Have an outlet. What do you love? Figure that out and then do that, regularly. My outlet which in many ways has become a second career path of mine (that’s a whole other interview, watch the documentary “Pistol Shrimps”) between founding/organizing leagues and coaching is basketball. Anywhere I have ever gone or moved to I have always been able to find new friends on the basketball court. Basketball is a forever changing sport. Every play is improvised and you have to be creative to find the solution to the problem. I think finding a hobby that allows you to shut off your career and life in general is the most important thing you can do in this life. Life should not be all work and no fun. Go play, be free, and live.
