We recently connected with DJ OMINAYA and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ OMINAYA , thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
As a DJ who tours frequently you have to have mental and physical stamina to endure life on the road. I make sure to prioritize some time for myself in order to recharge. This includes speaking to my wife and kids as much as possible via FaceTime as they truly recharge and uplift me every time we talk. I also take planned rests whenever we have breaks in the schedule. You’re always on the go when you’re on tour so I make sure I pace myself so I can give the crowd my all when I am on stage with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie or Lola Brooke.
When I am not on the road I am very selective on how many bookings I take a week. Nightclub gigs always start in the evening and finish in the early mornings so I have to make a conscious effort to space out those jobs. Lack of rest will eventually negatively affect your mood which can impact your how you bring the music to life.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Growing up in the heart of Hip-Hop’s birthplace, it’s no surprise DJ OMINAYA formed a career celebrating and sharing the hottest music. Learning to spin at just 14 years old, DJ OMINAYA sought mentorship from East Coast legends DJ Enuff, Kid Capri, and Brucie B. Their influence helped formulate DJ OMINAYA work ethic which became the blueprint of his success today!
When DJ OMINAYA isn’t on the road with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie or Lola Brooke, you can find him on Sherri Shepard television show by day, Taste Radio and turning up the most popular NYC parties by night. Additionally, his daily Morning Breakfast Twitch stream continues to be one of the most popular music format shows in the world.
DJ OMINAYA appreciates the impact music has had on his life and hopes to influence others in the same way!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In order to be successful as a DJ you have to you have be disciplined! If you are not disciplined chances are you will not improve. I started DJing in 1992 and I still make time to practice. I can’t stress this enough! Championship athletes still find the time practice so should you. You will only be as good as your daily habits!
Secondly, you have to be passionate about music; this is a must if you want to be well rounded in several genres. I’ve gone from R&B to Reggae to Reggaeton to Salsa to Freestyle in a single set. You have to love music to be a top tier DJ.
Lastly, you must remain teachable regardless of how much you have accomplished! Technology will continue to evolve and how fans consume music continues to change as well. So I am always open to learn about new trends and how it impacts the culture.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I thank my parents for providing me a wonderful childhood filled with love. I also attribute my work ethic to them as well. I wouldn’t be the success I am without their support and love!
