We were lucky to catch up with DJ Tone Experience recently and have shared our conversation below.
DJ Tone , thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.
I developed my decision-making skills thanks to a piece of advice from my Junior High School teacher Miss Perrier. She told me that “life is a lot simpler if you take a second to think before you act and speak” this advice to stay with me over the years and has been instrumental in shaping how I approach decisions in my life
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a full-time father deeply involved in my daughter‘s life which I balanced with my passion for DJ and Content creation over the years. I’ve organize numerous parties that have drawn thousands of attendees and I’m proud to be a promoter who creates memorable experiences I’ve also gone viral on TikTok, a nearly 300k followers and I’m excited to grow my presence even further.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most important qualities and skills in my journey as a DJ have been adaptability creativity and strong communication being adaptable is everything because no two crowds are the same. You have to read the vibe and adjust your music on the fly, but adaptability also extends beyond the music staying on top means keeping up with platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and other social media. You need to understand the trends create content And engage with your audience to keep your name out there. It’s about evolving with the industry and doing what it takes to stay relevant creativity is just as important. It keeps your sets fresh and make sure you stand out in a competitive space and communication ties it all together whether it’s building relationships with clients collaborators or connecting with your crowd during a set for anyone starting out I’d say stay consistent and never stop learning practice your craft explore different genres and don’t be afraid to experiment and find your style. Take risks and make sure you’re putting yourself out there especially on social media Engage with your audience and show them who you are not just as a DJ but as a person and always stay humble and open to feedback, that’s how you keep improving and leveling up.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The most helpful person in my journey has been my mentor DJ Danja at one point I was focused on being just a hip-hop DJ but he opened my eyes to becoming an open format DJ he taught me that sticking to one genre or being a regular DJ limits, your opportunities and your income. He showed me that by embracing different genres. I could fit in anywhere and play the right music for any crowd. Thanks to his advice I’ve been able to DJ in multiple states like Florida Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, California, Atlanta, Virginia, North Carolina and more. Beyond the advice he also taught me essential skills like scratching and mixing, which took my craft to the next level if it wasn’t for his guidance and pushed to expand my horizons, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My mom also played a huge role in the early days of my journey when I was working as a sanitation worker at a pharmaceutical building (2017) with a company called one service I barely had enough money to buy a second speaker. I had just enough to get one and when we went to Guitar Center she saw I only had money for one. Without me asking she went out of her way to buy me another speaker. She knew how much it meant to me, especially since I’ve always dreamed of things like being on TV or modeling as a kid, she believed in me when I was just starting out and that support helped push me forward.
