We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful D’Lisa Khademi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with D’Lisa below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have D’Lisa with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I feel that in business many places have this attitude of “I am going to get mine no matter the cost.” Having a work ethic I can stand behind is so important. This, in many ways, is your legacy. How you treat people, how you make them feel, how you lift them up, it’s this attitude and work ethic that people will remember you by. I always try to treat people, both clients and colleagues with respect and kindness. This isn’t always easy, we all have bad days which can sour your spirits. But at the end of the day you have to ask yourself, did you have a good day? Did you make people feel good? If your work ethic has a strong foundation everything else will fall into place.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been an esthetician since 2002 and the owner of Salon D’ Shayn since 2008. While I built my career on my proficiency with waxing, the last decade or so I have really grown my aging gracefully program. There are many modalities I use from facials to RF Microneedling, Peel, Plasma Fibroblast, Electrical Facial Stimulation and Thermal Heat. Many people nowadays are looking for other alternatives to plastic surgery and while there is nothing wrong with plastic surgery it can be extremely expensive and have lots of downtime.
I myself am 50 years young and in menopause so I know first hand how much we can physically change as we age. I help people have their outside match how they feel on the inside!
I also have been studying herbalism for over a year and created D’ Shayn Organics which will be a small line of body care and skincare products. I even built an apothecary in my backyard for creating my formulations. I will be spending the first part of 2024 for research and development.
Salon D’ Shayn is a full service salon with an amazing staff. We have 10 stylists, 1 nail artist, 2 massage therapists, a microblader and the best salon coordinator around, Roberta. We are very inclusive and welcome everyone. Our motto is “Everyone deserves to be pampered!”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities to have when it comes to business is be impeccable with your word, if you say you are going to do something you must follow through. If it is taking you longer than anticipated, that’s ok just let people know. Communication is also key, do not let things fester and don’t let gossip get out of control. Go to the source, sit down and have a frank conversation, even if it is hard. Remember not everyone communicates the same so you will need to modify how you do communicate with different people.
Lastly do not keep people around who are damaging to your business. You will know it as well and no matter how much you want to like the person or try to make it work, listen to your gut. It doesn’t take but one negative person to bring down the vibe of the whole business.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I have is keeping up with social media! It’s always changing and trying to stay relevant can be hard. Just knowing HOW to create social media content is a job in itself and most small businesses may not have a budget for a social media manager. I am always trying to make sure I am posting on all the platforms but it is tiring. I just want to do great work on my clients, not have to ask for pictures and videos to post online.
