We were lucky to catch up with Doc recently and have shared our conversation below.
Doc, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
By remembering the basis and reason of why I do what I do in the first place. Also limiting external forces from changing my constitution for consistency. From my experience, burnout usually happens when one loses sight of the metaphorical ball. I always try to keep my self centered on the bigger picture while also not forgetting the smaller pictures around it. God has given me that resolve and I eternally grateful for it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and creator of The Doc’s Board. A black owned and controlled multimedia brand created back in 2017. I operate it with Mr. Derrick Brown/The Hip Hop Historian (known professionally in the music world as King Scythe).
We have two main divisions of what we do. Our written work (the majority of our back log) and our video/audio based work. I specialize in writing biographical articles concerning black history, make videos concerning history and nerd culture, and I interview different black business individuals, professionals, creators, and trailblazers (One of which included Rocky Johnson- The Father of the Rock). We actually have two new interviews that should be out relatively soon to when readers will be reading this.
Up until recently the Hip Hop Historian wrote amazing articles and think pieces about Hip Hop and it’s cultural importance.
I love what I do. No one was doing it the way we were when we started and it was seen as a necessity.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey the three qualities that has impacted me the most is: My work Ethic, my ability to stay centered to my mission, and trying my hardest to stay motivated.
The advice I would give others with these aspects is; First, concerning by your work ethic. That can be built through steady discipline and light decision making as time goes on. Second, is never let anyone or anything steer you in a different direction from what you do. There will be things put in your way that will tempt you. Lastly, in terms of staying motivated for some it may come easy for others I would say to create a bubble around you were you live a drama free life and you have control over actions (that has helped me).
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I always pray. But my actions after that is usually to try to see the situation in different perspectives. I haven’t had a true day off from what I do since 2020 but my mind has never truly faltered because I understand success isn’t a one time thing or something that comes easy. There are certain things I refuse to do for money and resource based gains so I put myself though harder struggles. Understanding the path I chose helps to limit the “feeling” of being overwhelmed.
