We recently connected with Dom Flicksz and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dom , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Honestly I found my purpose around 17 years old . My family and I were on Coney Island Beach , Everyone went to get food while I stayed back on the sand with my 9 month old nephew . As he picked his head up to look for his dad ( my brother) he used his hand to block the rays from the sun inorder to see. I thought that was amazing, the fact that no one taught this baby that but yet he just naturally knew. My mom had a small digital camera at the time so I picked up the camera and took a photo for two reasons; one because I thought no one would believe me , secondly because in that moment it changed my whole perspective of humans and how naturally intelligent we are .
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I do alot of documentary style photography . Growing up in Brooklyn / Queens , Ny allowed me to experience a wide range of diversity in cultures . Which is something that is used greatly in my work especially with a current project im working on called personal space . The personal space project consists of me going into individuals natural habits such as their homes and capturing the day to day activities/lifestyle.
The fact that my art allows me to meet so many different people from so many different walks of life is extremely exciting. My camera done took me places I never thought I would be . Being able to document humanity truly for what it is with out any false narratives is something I consider to be special . Seeing how we are all so different but yet still so much alike. We all have a story to tell and I get to not only tell folks stories visually but I get the opportunity to immortalize them .
Currently im focused on have major solo exhibition and also creating coffee table books of my work .
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Finding my purpose within my art/Craft helped me so much . Asking why do I take photos was a question I asked myself in the beginning of my journey for a long time. Thinking back to how I first started the answer popped into my head
” The beauty within humanity that no one takes the time to see anymore because we’re all caught up by society’s illusion”-Dom .
The photography world and art world is over saturated. Alot of photographers and Artists now of days follow these trends and yes that will get you noticed on soical media, get you gigs , etc, But ask yourself will following that trend make your work/Art live forever and become timeless?
Real talk I’ve done felt every emotion through my journey so far . There was times I was in love with my work, times i felt I hate my work , falling out of love with it. I’ve cried, smiled , yelled, gotten depressed , etc . At those times i would just put the camera down and go live life . I stop watching soical media , stopped having conversations with other Artists and just lived. That always brought back that spark for me because it was like a reprogramming to factory settings ( factory settings being why i even do this shit) .Disconnecting not only allowed the room to reconnect but also reminded me to stay in my lane ( there is no traffic in your lane) and create for self first and foremost. People enjoying and connecting with your Art/ Work is a plus.
Art is subjective some will like it , some will understand it , others won’t and thats just what it is . Thats why everything i do is a reflection of self from my trails and tribulations to my wins and success and everything in-between and I show all of that through my photography. At the end of the day stay 10 toes down , block out all the outside noise and stay true to self and everything will fall in line . Never get caught up in the politics , oh man will there be politics don’t let that discourage you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Lately I have been looking for new people to collaborate with . As I said before im working on a project called ” Personal space ” where I go into the homes and neighborhoods of people of the urban communities and document their day to day life . Looking for individuals that live real lives and aren’t ashamed of who they are would be my ideal subjects for the project.
