We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DOM THAYSEN a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DOM, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think I only actually stopped feeling the imposter syndrome maybe a week ago. It’s quite a bizarre idea that your perspective can change in an instant. A moment in time can change your entire outlook on something, that’s why I never say no to an experience. I have been living in Los Angeles for 10 years and only now feel ready. It’s hard to describe it and when I think back, and wonder why I wasn’t making music from the start? It’s scary when you think about the big things that could potentially happen if you really apply yourself and holding yourself back because of the fear. Not realizing that in this creative journey when the time comes you’ll be ready. You’re going to be a well seasoned artist after playing over a hundred shows, here’s hoping. Or you run away crying and quit. I think you realize that you have to be everything for yourself and structure your life as if it’s already happening. I believe fully in manifesting and attracting things into your life, that’s what I’ve been doing my whole life, even unconsciously as a child. I would put a chair in the middle of the living room, point all the lights towards me and sing a song. As ridiculous that sounds, I was envisioning my life before it even happened. Now here I am…
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Dom, I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. I moved to Los Angeles when I was twenty. I have been playing piano and writing songs since I was eleven years old. I have always had an insane hunger to create and to succeed at it. It took me a long time to crack the code and understand how the system works but I guess that’s all part of the journey. I am so immensely blessed to have met such amazing humans along the way that have be incredibly supportive. As I go down this path, I feel more and more at home. I absolutely love writing music, reading scripts, collaborating with other amazing artists. Making art. As a kid we moved houses many times and I always had to make each new place feel like home. The first thing I would do is put up my music posters and set up my creative corner, that made it home. Didn’t matter where I was.
I have been acting and modeling my whole life and recently joined a psychedelic rock band called Love Songs Divine as their lead vocalist. We just released a six song EP which we are very excited about. I have also decided to start my career as a solo artist and will be coming out with my first single “Cosmic Crime” on September 9th which I am so excited to share!
I have written seven songs for my album and will be starting to play live shows as a solo artist soon!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Top three things I would say is, to always follow your gut. Your intuition will never lie to you, as long as you keep checking in with yourself you’ll stay on track.
Second thing I think, would be to take the time to enjoy where you are. The journey is long and the journey is great. It’s all apart of the process. If you don’t enjoy the time it takes to cultivate something incredible you’ll miss all the lessons. When you do finally get to your destination, you’ll appreciate it so much more.
Last thing that has been a huge factor is being able to be venerable. Not caring what people think and living your truth. Working on yourself, not only personally but professionally too and surrounding yourself with people who are like minded and headed the same way.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
As a multifacited artist, I write songs, sing, enjoy doing make-up and have been acting my whole life. I would love to be involved in anything creative. I am always seeking out inspired individuals who want to create art. Whether it be photography, music, art or films. It is all one and the same for me. Any project is always an opportunity to learn new lessons, discover more about myself as an artist and collaborate with cool like minded humans.
At the moment I am working on my debut album and looking for musicians to write and collaborate on songs. I work best if you send an instrumental of your track and I can write and sing along to. I am a writing machine and move at lighting speed.
