Meet Domica Light

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Domica Light a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Domica, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My purpose was drawn out of pain. I was a single mom. I was a teen mom. I was a child struggle with behavioral issues, traumatic life that I was living at home. I was in healthcare and saw the suffering. I worked as a drug and alcohol addiction counselor I worked in DCFS care and saw the potential situations that I could have been in a case management for homeless population when I went through bouts of homelessness myself. My purpose came from pain

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I currently have several businesses. One in particular is a nonprofit organization gear towards providing social services to the communities in the Midwest of Illinois. We provide case management and linking other services in network to clients in need The areas that we are aiming for are working with juveniles going through court proceedings or in DCFS care. We also aim to work with newly release. Prisoners who need to acquire skills to maintain and start a new life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Determination, flexibility, and faith early on in my journey and never understood how important it is to believe in something higher than yourself my preferences is God. Developing a relationship with him was most important because the determination was put in me from Him. The flexibility that I have comes from always wanting to improve myself the faces of my children wanting and needing things and never having truly anyone to call upon keep me determined to go further in life . I always believed I had greatness inside of me. Having self confidence is so valuable.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

Value in the Valley by Iyanla Vanzant
This book gave me the insight and permissions I needed to fully understand that every valley had value to it like Joshua being imprisoned I would always ask God why? Then I learned to understand why not me. I learned to cry when I need to and to accept love by the ones that truly love me with their actions. I learned to love myself first and best before giving what I don’t have and filling myself up in order to pour out
