We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Higgins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Dominique with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I definitely get my work ethic from the women in my family. My mom has been a real estate broker for well over 30 years, and growing up I just remember her always hustling. Looking at properties on weekends, calling clients at night, and going above and beyond to make her career work. Likewise, my godmother carried a similar work ethic, getting up for work everyday at 4:30am for over 20 years. So, I very much got the message early on that you have to put in the hours and make certain sacrifices to create the life you desire.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a realtor! When people ask how long I’ve been doing it, I tell them officially since 2014, but unofficially my whole life. My first job was acting as my mom’s designer – I would create renderings for the homes her clients were building, and do all the graphic design work for her listings– flyers, brochures, websites, sit in open houses, you name it. After graduating from college, I decided to return to CA and get to work right away as a realtor full-time.
Flash forward to today, I work with buyers and sellers to achieve their real estate goals, and more importantly, create a strategy for them to turn their first home into their retirement.
I think that’s what makes my work so exciting too. Right now there are SO many options for homeowners and future homebuyers to generate additional income from their property, through things like Accessory Dwelling Units, SB-9 lot splits, and now AB 1033. I’ve greatly enjoyed sharing that message with people on social media and when working with clients one-on-one.
Along the same lines, I recently launched a pre-approved Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) plan in the city of Los Angeles (TheDomADU.com) and now offer it to buyers and homeowners looking to get an ADU fast and generate additional income to offset their mortgage.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities I would say have had the most impact on my journey have been: 1) being nice, 2) being present, and 3) following up. Out of all the tips and tricks that I’ve learned, these always come back to be the most beneficial because it’s helped me stand out from my competition.
Sadly, many people in my industry watch shows like Selling Sunset or Million Dollar Listing, and assume all the yelling, attitude, and drama is okay, but all of that is just TV.
Yes, clients want to know that you know your stuff and want confidence, but they also want to know they have your full attention when you’re speaking with them and to know that they matter to you.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Yes! You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero played THEE biggest important role in my development. It was the book that jumpstarted my self-development journey and taught me the importance of investing in yourself through books, classes, courses, coaches, good food, experiences, etc.
I think a lot of us (at least I did at one point) get stuck in work mode. We think we have to live, breathe, and do work 24/7 to get ahead, and this book really showed me that striking a balance is important, and leaving room for yourself to just enjoy life can actually give you more energy to show up the way you need to for clients.
