We recently connected with Dominique Kohlmeyer and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
With my creativity it’s really a big part of who I am, I really enjoy doing anything creative like cooking, interior design, gardening etc… ever since i was really young though i loved fashion and the runway… There are times as with anyone in the creative industry that you really doubt yourself and the work you’re doing that’s when I really start struggling with my creative spark…what helps me then is to just take a break and do other things i really enjoy…spending time in nature helps immensely really just surrounding myself with anything that inspires me…I find sometimes just being alone and spending time with myself, my thoughts without the noise is what really helps me get to the core of who I am and what inspires me…New York was extremely inspiring too and just made me want to jump right into my work, that is why I think one day i’d love to do business there… What also helps is meeting other creatives and listening to their stories….and of-course my absolute favorite thing to do is just looking at runway shows and pictures from my favorite designers in the early 2000’s that is the absolute most inspiring thing for me to get my creativity flowing…
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a Fashion Designer, I really love what I do it’s a massive creative outlet for me, and I get to really express myself through what I do. What I find most exciting about my industry is that I can make people feel empowered through my designs also that it is an ever-changing industry no time to get bored, also coming up with new creative innovative ideas all the time is very stimulating. Currently I am working on my first big Collection which will be available in Johannesburg and Cape town and most importantly i’m trying to get my designs into New York and the international market.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 things that have been most impactful in my journey thus-far I would say is my ability to work well under pressure or deadlines I actually love a deadline it gets me going and pushing towards a goal. So I always try and set goal posts for things i’d like to get done or do. Last year I decided that I wanted to do New York fashion week this year.. an opportunity presented itself and I took it even though it was tough I made it happen. I’m also very resilient and I’ve always been able to push through difficult situations the fashion industry is very cut-throat so you need to be thick skinned. Thirdly I think that I have pretty good people skills and I love networking which is crucial in this industry a lot of what you achieve has to do with meeting the right people at the right time and luck! But remember hard work also equals luck the harder you work the luckier you get.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’d love to collaborate with other brands I think collaborations are essential in getting your name out there. My ideal collaboration would be brands that stand out in design something unique and/or statements pieces., I also love the idea of collaborating with a sporty, young and dynamic brand if you are interested in collaborating please send me an email at [email protected] or dm me @dkstudios___
