Meet Dominique Vanhecke

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Vanhecke a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

I was raised in a family were all chances were given to develop ourselves creatively and intellectually, but always with the ethic of giving back to the community, friends and family. On top I have a smaller sister – 7 years of age difference – which I took care of since her birth, which greatly shaped me as ‘the big brother’.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Sound by the Sea is a listening bar and Mediterranean restaurant found in May 2023 in Oceanside California. I am originally from Belgium and have been travelling all over the world, bringing these experiences all together in the listening bar concept. At Sound by the Sea, we have a very laidback atmosphere to enjoy eclectic music on a vintage 1975 JBL Hifi soundsystem that I brought from Paris, paired with the latest modern hifi and DJ equipment. During our opening hours, we curate all music being played and open up the horizons to all genres with daily local (and sometimes international!) Guest Sound Selectors who bring their music. The whole concept is created to be very laidback with a living room vibe and stimulate discovery and connection with other people. Sound by the Sea is a proper third space to disconnect and enjoy good music, food and drinks.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Curiosity, keeping an open mind, resilience to keep going.
Don’t be afraid to make the jump, but expect hard work and find your motivation within. Surround yourself with good and capable people.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

my girlfriend has been a lifelong motivator and source of energy to make changes, dare, and keep pushing.
