We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Don Oldie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Don , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I’m not too sure. Sometimes, it’s like the thought of continuing is a no-brainer. Other times, you have to look within and find it. Depending on the circumstance, resilience comes from different places. The foundation block would be God, for sure. We can blame my upbringing as well. We had to have some drive and resolve for everything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As of now, my focus is releasing music at an efficient rate with everything attached, if that makes sense. So, not only the music, but the music videos, the features, and the whole nine.
I’ve obtained my studio equipment so I’ve been going through the ups and downs with recording vocals, mixing, mastering, and all of that nonsense. It’s a beautiful process, to say the least; I’m learning to love myself. I’m proud of that.
Because I have the time luxury and freedom, I plan on using the next year to release small bodies of music consistently as mentioned with all the moving parts to coincide. Stay tuned; it should be great.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My three qualities? I would say diligence, determination, and self-aware. I grew into diligence. I had to make myself sit and put in the hours to get here. It sucked at first, but eventually, I found a love for everything.
I think I was always to find my version of success. We all want to be successful, but success looks different for everyone. I believe determination is the “why”. Why do I get up and record? Why do I keep dropping projects? The why drives the action, and determination is just that: your why.
Lastly, self-awareness. I’ve grown into a self-aware type of guy as well. I mean, we all should know the basics of self-awareness, but that deep level where you can accurately interpret your ideas and allow them to flow into what the inner you is saying is a different level. Trust me.
With these three traits developed, you should start to see seeds growing in the next year or so.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible. Its the foundation of who I be.
