Meet Donald Cassel

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Donald Cassel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Donald below.

Hi Donald, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

Probably inherited part from my Manchurian Mom who had a Go-For-It attitude. I believe risk taking is an enterpreneur requirement if you have a big vision. You have to just push ahead if you believe in something and be willing to pivot at the right time as you see how things are progressing. As the saying goes bigger the risk the bigger the reward but that also means you must play smarter and reduce chances of failure at ever corner. Failure is your teacher and a preequisite towards big success. I have learned to become a risk taker at most things I do and have the scars and stories to prove it with no real regrets.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

This question is an entire book of stories, inventions, brands and challenges too much to list here as I have started well over 30 brands including world reknown brands like Grind King Truck Company and Von Dutch Clothing brand. I am a serial inventor brand starter and always creating several things at a time. We will have to narrow this question down to probably just a few of them as each one has an interesting story behind it . I am in the process of launching a new exciting brand called Vybeslinger in October.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My superpower is called A.G.E. – Adaptability, Grit , Experience
This is my secret to survivability in a unpredictable world .
It is something that takes a lot of driving force and commitment but will allow you to pull through just about anything.

I am using it at full force now and that is the reason what I am doing will result in great success.

To those starting out I suggest using all of these until death as it will keep you fresh and ahead of the game even through times of total chaos.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

At the beginning it is better to learn as many aspects of running your business as possbily untill you can afford to hire people that will be better at certain things than you are in areas that aren’t your most strongest. I can say from experience this is true even if you are older. At any age if you want to have a business you are in control of it is crucial to understand how all the parts work together and when you hire people to replace YOU, you will know whether they are capable or not.
