We were lucky to catch up with Donald Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Donald, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It’s not so much that I found my purpose, my purpose really found me … or rather, it was there, all the while. I just had to recognize it. Through law school and a career, I always enjoyed writing – expressing myself via language and the written word. I was only after a thirty year career in business, and the writing of my first book, did I realize that my calling was to tell stories and to help others do the same. Everyone has a story. And it’s so important to share those stories for the benefit of others.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Currently, our team at Alchemy Media Publishing is prepping to release another work of fiction, WADE IN THE WATER by Dorothy Mallory Jones. It is a story told through the voice of ninety year old Ava Woods. Born in 1900 to a family of hard-pressed sharecroppers with a passel of kids, Ava relates poignant and often harrowing stories of life in her blended family with its wise and harried mother, volatile and troubled father, and rambunctious siblings.
The skillful narrative and character development foreground the twin perils of sharecropping in the post-Reconstruction South and the harsh reality of Jim Crow segregation – facts of life which are never far from mind. As Ava’s mother, Lena, once remarked, “We live too close to our bellies.”

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most consequential skill that I have come to appreciate is not really a skill at all, but the realization that no goal can be achieved without the commitment to the discipline required to achieve it. It is the realization that all goals can be reduced to a series of repetitive (daily) tasks. Bite-sized pieces. These daily tasks are often easy to do, but, like-wise, they are easy not to do. That’s where the discipline comes in. Commitment and discipline. It works every time.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
At Alchemy Media Publishing, we are always willing to engage and collaborate with creatives, professionals, and everyone in between who want to share their stories. Stories are the life-blood of culture and everyone has something to contribute to the greater good. We will help you develop your narrative and get your manuscript “publication ready.” Then, we can help you disseminate your story to the world. As I’ve stated: Everyone has a story.
