We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Donecia Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Donecia below.
Donecia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I have learned to affirm myself in my role in whatever room that I may enter. I have reassured myself that I have earned a space in that room just as others have. I try not to allow my external circumstances to deter me from my goal. It can be difficult to make an impact in certain spaces because the standards haven’t been challenged as much as they should. However, I know that my work and my brand is just as important as those is my counterparts from a different cultural or racial background.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am blogger turned content writer. My blogging started out as an outlet during a rough divorce. I gained a following of women, who looked like me that needed the advice I was giving. It was a humbling feeling to connect with women who were trying to figure out life just like I was. Eventually I branched out and started doing small write ups for various blogs, which created inquiries about me writing a book. I took a summer off and dedicated it to my book, Black Girl Butterfly Effect, which launched in August 2022. I have always had a passion for writing so any opportunity to express myself is one I seize. Ironically, my content writing business came from a quick weekend interest of offering various writing services.. From that my business, Necia Always Writes, was born.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that helped me excel was dedication, self-awareness, and being open to change. I realized that nothing great comes from being stuck in a box that is self-imposed. My therapist always states that failure cannot exist if you’ve never experienced a new concept. The best advice I have for someone on their journey is to stay dedicated to what makes you happy, no matter how that may look to others. Don’t ever miss a moment to listen to others experiences or to learn from others; experience isn’t the only teacher.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth this year has been learning to accept help from others. . Accepting help doesn’t weaken me or how I’m viewed. I have learned so much from watching others and how they do things. The wisdom I’ve gained has given me more insight into myself and my purpose.
