Meet Donita McCants

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Donita McCants a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Donita , thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I overcame burnout when I decided to take control of my career. I quit my job working as an associate veterinarian and decided start my own business. I started a concierge mobile veterinary hospital from the back of my SUV in August 2021 and eventually expanded to a full service Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van in March 2022.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am Dr. Donita better know as Dr. Donita Orlando Mobile Vet! I have been in practice for 8 years and I eventually branched out on my own and started my business. Like most medical professionals, I was burnt out and I wanted to find a way to fall back in love with my career. Being a mother I needed flexibility for my life and I wanted to be more present for my son and family. The business has been a major success because we focus so heavily on client communication and the experience. Like our motto says “First Class Door-step Petcare” is what we strive for! The name of the business is called Dr. Donita’s Veterinary Concierge Services and we provide nothing but excellence and high quality care. I also enjoy giving back to the community by participating in free vaccine clinics for the homeless and those in need as well. I am most excited about our social media presence as well – I have worked so hard to build the brand “Ask Dr. Donita” where it started as a way to give pet parents tips on how to best care for their furry friends. It eventually has grown to an amazing platform on all social media avenues. We now finally have a youtube channel where we will showcase our adventures on the road in the sprinter van! Definitely check us out on all platforms – Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok and now YouTube!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, boundaries, and faith! Resiliency was key throughout my journey of just becoming a veterinarian. I had underlying struggles with test anxiety and attention deficit, that I didn’t realize existed until after I graduated. But I worked hard and overcame those obstacles by finding ways around it. Knowing that it’s okay to ask for help or have accommodations for testing is normal. Boundaries are important to maintain in all aspects of life, especially as a business owner. If you have set hours then stand by them, if you have set pricing do not waiver. The clientele you seek will respect and value your time and prices, which leads to having faith in your brand and what you are providing.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always looking to collaborate with anyone interested in having me speak on various topics. My favorite topic is speaking about mental health and how to overdue and be creative with how we approach day to day life and finding balance in life. Supporting and giving hope to those aspiring business owner, future vets and the youth always brings me the most joy! If you’re interested in collaborating send me an email at askdrdonita@gmail.com and we can work together on a project!
