Meet Donna Frost

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Donna Frost a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Donna, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so muchl folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I come from a musical family, so it came naturally for me. I loved to sing from the minute I could talk. I learned how to play piano at 9, guitar at 11 and began writing songs in my teens. I have spent most of my life in this business. I love the joy music brings to others. I love feeling the connection with the audience when I perform. I have been blessed with so many amazing experiences in my career. As I grow older I have found a purpose with my music. I wanted to make a difference. I am involved in outreach programs with three organizations that are very near and dear to me: Music for Seniors, an organization that provides live music for seniors in various facilities; the Humane Society of Sumner County, our non profit animal shelter; and Room in the Inn, an organization that serves our homeless community.. To be able to serve with my music for these three organizations has been the greatest blessing in my life
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Music has been my life literally from the start. My parents had a gospel group and traveled. They were performing 2 weeks before I was born and went back on the road with me when I was 2 weeks old. I loved Music, all genres. There was always Music in our house, it was a major part of our lives and still is to this day. I began playing piano at age 9 and took lessons for 2 years. At age 11 the guitar became my main instrument, Like all kids in the 60s, the Beatles were the greatest influence on me. I had to learn how to.play guitar! I spent many hours after school playing my guitar along with my records!
When I was 13, I played my first professional show. I began traveling with my music at age 16 and have never stopped. I play 250 shows a year, I have recorded and released 10 CDs of my original music. What is special about my music? That it comes from my heart and soul. My songs are based on my life experiences. Some make you laugh, some make you cry. These experiences are things we have all been through, it’s life. My hope is that my songs help others who are going through the same thing.
This year has been extra special for me. In April the Mississippi Music Foundation gave me the Best Americana Artist for 2023, which was such a thrill! My latest album, The Beautiful Unseen, came out in the spring and is doing very well. In the past 4 weeks we have been added to Americana radio stations acrossvthe US and we are moving up the Americana Album charts. I also released my first gospel project, You Are My Song, last year and my first single from it, God Knows, is moving up on the gospel charts! It is a very exciting time in my life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Taking music lessons, of course, practicing diligently every day, the dedication to my art and staying with it, I have never given in or given up. And it is never too late to accomplish anything in life. I am 65 years old and am experiencing some wonderful things right now. I am not rich and famous but I have found my place in this business! I am enjoying the ride! And thankful every single day!
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
There have been many challenges the past three years. First of all, of course was the pandemic and all those months live music venues were completely shut.down. I went live on Facebook for 62 consecutive weeks from home.. I wrote and recorded my first of 5 CDs during the past 3 years called The Quarantine Sessions Volume 1 snd I was in the midst of writing the songs which became The Quarantine Sessions Volume 2. Sadly in December of 2020, my precious mother, Barbara, got Covid and was hospitalized for five weeks before she passed January 12, 2021. It was especially painful because this was during the height of the disease and restrictions were in place at the hospitals. We could not be with her at all, only able to communicate via FaceTime. She and I were so very close and losing her has been the biggest heartbresk of my life. I got back on the road and began traveling everywhere again and 2022 had been one of my best years. I also had written, recorded and released Thankful, my 2nd ukulele music project, and my first gospel project, You Are My Song. And last summer I was in Joshua Tree, California recording The Beautiful Unseen, my latest CD that I wrote and recorded with my longtime friend, Jack Howell. The rest of the year was promising. Then I suffered a series of health woes. I was in a car accident in late September, got Covid in October, took a hard fall during that, then developed inflammation in my back and legs that caused a lot of problems. I had to cancel all of my road dates from October 2022 through March 2023. I continued to play locally. I never stopped. The Beautiful Unseen came out in March 2023, in April I began traveling again and won the Mississippi Music Foundation Award for Best Americana Artist. I had a full schedule of road dates and things were going well. Then on June 21, my father, Don, had a stroke and was hospitalized, developing pneumonia as well . Those first days were frightening and we have been on a rollercoaster ride the past 33 days. I canceled all of my road dates during this time so I could be with him, but kept on with all of my local performances He has overcome all the obstacles and got to come home July 26! During his hospitalization, my brothers, my nephews and I took shifts each day around the clock at the hospital with Dad. I am so thankful he has come back from this and doing well as he recovers.
Had it not been for my faith in God and for my music, I would have never made it through these times. I am truly blessed.
