Meet Dorian A. Nicholson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dorian A. Nicholson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dorian A., so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Being the only one in the room who looks like me has taught me the importance of standing out and staying true to my values. I’ve always prioritized being a man of my word, and I take pride in following through on my goals and plans. While the journey may sometimes take longer than expected, I remain committed and focused. This resilience has not only helped me navigate challenges but has also allowed me to create meaningful connections and inspire others. Embracing my unique perspective has made me more effective and successful, and I strive to pave the way for others to do the same.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a fitness professional based in Miami, originally from Brooklyn, NYC, and I’m passionate about helping people discover the joy of movement. I teach various modalities, from strength training and Pilates to running and yoga, focusing on delivering an exceptional experience in every class.

One of the most exciting things I’ve started is a networking event called First Friday. Every first Friday of the month, I create a safe space for amazing individuals to connect while enjoying yoga accompanied by a live DJ, all set in a high-end art gallery in Wynwood. It’s a unique blend of fitness, art, and community, and I’m thrilled to provide an atmosphere where people can unwind, meet new friends, and find inspiration.

I’m always looking to expand my offerings and create more opportunities for connection and wellness, so stay tuned for more exciting events and classes!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey, I believe the three most impactful qualities have been:

1-Going for what you want: You have to be proactive in pursuing your goals. It won’t always be handed to you, and sometimes you really just need to show up for yourself. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; create it.
2-Following up: Don’t hesitate—send that email, make that call, or send that text. Waiting can lead to missed opportunities, so take the initiative to follow up and keep the momentum going.
3-Pouring into your own cup: Remember to prioritize your own well-being before trying to help others. You can’t support those around you if you’re not taking care of yourself first.

For those early in their journey, I encourage you to embrace these qualities. Take risks, stay connected, and prioritize self-care. It’s all about building a solid foundation that will help you thrive in whatever path you choose!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to allow me the freedom to pursue what I wanted. They always had their opinions, but they believed in me when I said I was going to do something. This trust empowered me to be creative, make mistakes, and learn from those experiences, shaping me into the person I am today. I truly feel that not being sheltered helped me grow and navigate the world with confidence. Their support gave me the space to explore and discover my passions.
