Meet Dorothee Kumpe

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dorothee Kumpe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Dorothee with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I am from Germany originally. I grew up in the countryside in small villages and towns that were predominantly agricultural and farming land. My mothers side of the family grew wine grapes and made/sold wine; whereas my fathers side were in the animal bristle brush-making business. The old factory still bears my last name in Kassel, Germany. This is where my work ethic started. In any kind of agriculture, you don’t have a “I don’t want to get up and milk the cows today or feed the horses or plant the seeds”. Every day, no matter what: you WORK. Coming to America at an early age and spending seasons here, I started to work early at age 15. I became known for my relentless work ethic.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In working with copper, I have found beautiful variations in how to express my art through the metal. I can copper form, plate, and forge with copper. My most recent and exciting project is Hart’s Purpose by Deep Purpose. This is a series of what I call my “irregular souls” hearts, plated in silver or gold, and balanced by a stainless steel chain. This line was directly inspired by my friend Emily Hartstone, and it is in her namesake we created Hart’s Purpose.
We are partnering to go into production and expand in 2024 to bring variations that can be donated to a variety of charities. It is not only excellent for all ages, but simply beautiful and elegant, with a purpose.
A portion of the proceeds of these hearts and Hart’s Purpose will always go to leukemia and lymphoma patients, just like Emily.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities I think that really helped my journey was resilience, determination, and staying true to my inner child. Yes really! My inner child was always the creative center and reconnecting to it (post age 40)enabled me to really find my path in the most authentic and purposeful way I could. My advice to all is never stop creating and always touch base and check in with yourself: it’s where the best ideas are born.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love collaborating and bringing attention to others’ purpose, whatever that may be, provided it aligns with Deep Purpose. I am looking to create more for charities and working with charities. In the past I have worked with Animal Rescues, donating portions of proceeds of anything with an animal or insect theme; with TranspireHelp.org and the LGBTQIA+ community I donate a portion of the proceeds of anything with a rainbow to TranspireHelp.org and was their Pride on the Block chair person these past two years. Of course with the launch of Hart’s Purpose 5 months ago, 25% of the proceeds of the heart goes to leukemia and lymphoma patients.Paying it forward and finding others that wish to do the same, these are the kinds of people and organizations I want to collab and partner with.
